Position: Autism Support Worker
Reporting to: Director, Student Services
Location: Eskasoni Elementary & Middle School
Term: Full-time
Anticipated Start Date: September 8, 2025
Job Summary:
The position provides individualized, compassionate, and dedicated support to students on the autism spectrum disorder and/or diverse support needs in a school environment. This role works collaboratively with teachers, specialists, and families to create a positive and inclusive learning experience for our students.
Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one support to students with ASD in the classroom, during transitions, and in social settings.
- Assist students individually or in small groups with assignments and reinforce learning and retention concepts under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
- Support the implementation of individualized education plans (IEPs) and behaviour intervention plans (BIPs) as directed by the special education team.
- Develop and utilize positive reinforcement strategies to encourage desired behaviours and promote learning.
- Use effective communication techniques to build trust and rapport with students.
- Identify opportunities for peer interactions to support and encourage relationships and carry out goals to modify behaviour.
- Assist teachers with classroom adaptations, visual supports and modifications to meet the needs of students with ASD.
- Collect data and document student progress in collaboration with the special education team.
- Maintain a safe and positive learning environment for all students.
- Foster social interaction and communication skills in students with ASD.
- Stay up-to-date on best practices in ASD support.
- Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress and needs.
- Monitor students during assigned duty times.
Requirements:
- Post-secondary education in behaviour management, child development, psychology, and other areas specific to the role;
- Previous experience working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (preferred);
- Strong understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and its characteristics.
- Fluency in Mi’kmaq language;
- Knowledge of Mi’kmaq culture, history and community dynamics;
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students with social/emotional behavioural needs;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace applications. (docs, drive, sheets, classroom)
Salary Range: $58,512 to $69,866
