About the Role:

Reporting to the Community Y Program Director, the After School Program Staff plays a vital role in the YMCA's mission to support and nurture children and youth in the community. This position provides direct supervision, engaging activities, and a safe environment for children enrolled in the after-school program. The staff will support children in developing social, emotional, and physical skills through a variety of fun, structured activities, including arts and crafts, sports, homework help, and group games. The goal is to create a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere where every child feels supported and valued.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide active supervision of children during all activities and transitions, ensuring a safe and secure environment. Implement and enforce safety protocols and behavior management techniques, ensuring the safety of all participants. Conduct headcounts regularly and ensure children are signed in and out of the program according to YMCA policies.
  • Plan, organize, and implement a variety of age-appropriate activities, including games, arts and crafts, sports, educational programs, and recreational activities. Lead group activities that promote teamwork, positive social interactions, and healthy development. Assist with homework help and ensure children complete their assignments in a supportive, positive manner.
  • Maintain a positive and respectful environment for children, using YMCA behavior management techniques to promote good behavior and conflict resolution. Serve as a role model by demonstrating positive attitudes, communication skills, and behavior. Encourage positive interaction, cooperation, and mutual respect among all children.
  • Build and maintain positive, supportive relationships with children, ensuring they feel safe, valued, and heard. Get to know children’s individual needs and interests to help provide a personalized and engaging program experience. Offer support to children who may need extra attention or assistance with tasks or activities.
  • Communicate effectively with children, parents, and other YMCA staff members to ensure a smooth and successful after-school experience. Provide parents with feedback regarding their child’s progress, behavior, and participation in the program. Work closely with other program staff to ensure consistency in program delivery and meet the needs of all participants.
  • Help with registration, attendance tracking, and documentation of child progress or incidents as required. Assist in preparing materials and supplies needed for daily activities. Report any safety concerns, incidents, or behavioral issues to the Child and Youth Programmer in a timely manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Skills Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in education, recreation, or child development is a plus.
  • Previous experience working with children in a group setting (e.g., daycare, summer camp, school setting) is preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain upon hiring.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage groups of children with diverse needs and interests.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to maintain control in challenging situations.
  • Passion for working with children and a commitment to promoting a positive, inclusive environment.
