About the job

In this role, you will carry out a variety of technical duties associated with the delivery of wildlife research and monitoring programs.

You will:

  • provide technical expertise to support the delivery of both lab and field programs;
  • purchase, inventory, and maintain specialized lab and field equipment;
  • ensure safe operations of lab and field personnel, equipment, and vehicles;
  • prepare reports, accurately collect and enter data, and conduct preliminary data summaries;
  • communicate effectively orally and in writing with team members, partners and the public.

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

  • You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
  • You are willing to be vaccinated for rabies.
  • You are capable of working in inclement weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, cold).
  • You are capable of working in low altitude aircraft (twin otter, beaver, helicopter).
  • You can be available to travel extensively for long periods of time during research projects throughout the province of Ontario.


Scientific expertise:

  • You have working knowledge of wildlife research and monitoring techniques and principles to plan, organize and implement lab and field projects.
  • You have knowledge of wildlife disease, management and control techniques.
  • You have working knowledge of mammalian anatomy to perform necropsies and collect biological samples both in the field and in the lab.


Technical knowledge and skills:

  • You have expertise and ability to conduct lab and field work including use of live traps, microscopes, and other equipment to collect data and process biological samples.
  • You have the ability to maintain equipment; follow and contribute to the development of standard operating procedures and protocols.
  • You have experience with proper data collection and management techniques to ensure data is collected accurately and securely on data sheets or electronic devices (i.e. data loggers, trail cameras, GPS).
  • You have working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable workplace regulations.


Communication and interpersonal skills:

  • You have the ability to communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy, to train staff, present results, and prepare reports.
  • You have well developed interpersonal skills to develop and maintain strong relationships and communication with other staff, partner agencies and the public.
  • You have the demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision, as a team member and as a leader (as required) and provide daily supervision/coaching to staff.


Computer skills:

  • You have demonstrated experience working with computer software used in word processing, data entry and management and preliminary data summary.
  • You have experience using computer software to work with spreadsheets and databases.
  • You have a working knowledge of GIS, GPS and mobile/electronic data collection technology to plan, map and report on field and lab programs.
