POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting directly to the Director of Intergovernmental Affairs/Title and Rights, the Wildlife Biologist is responsible for leading and supporting wildlife research, monitoring, and habitat management initiatives for Westbank First Nation (WFN), with a strong emphasis on integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) into all aspects of project design and implementation. This position involves conducting fieldwork, analyzing data, and developing management strategies to support the conservation of wildlife populations and their habitats within WFN lands. The Wildlife Biologist will liaise between First Nations, governments, third parties and the Intergovernmental Affairs/Title and Rights (IGA/T&R) office on environmental and land related matters.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, specializing in Biology or Zoology is preferred
- Minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated experience in a similar role
- Experience in working with Indigenous communities/people considered an asset
- Experience working with Okanagan/syilx communities/people considered an asset
- Equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES
- Fosters positive relations and liaises with Indigenous organizations, federal, provincial and municipal governments.
- Researches WFN and Okanagan interests and use within the Okanagan traditional territories and WFN Governance area
- Participates in various community, council and/or committee meetings
- Provides assistance to the Director of IGA/T&R on issues related to the Okanagan traditional territory and activities within the WFN Governance area
Wildlife Research and Monitoring:
- Designs and implements research projects to monitor wildlife populations, incorporating Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) as a guiding principle in study design and project creation
- Conducts fieldwork to collect data on animal behavior, population dynamics, habitat use, and health assessments
- Uses telemetry, camera traps, and other technologies to track wildlife movements and habitat preferences
- Supports the baseline data collection on reserve for WFN to inform all other departments
Habitat Assessment and Management:
- Evaluates the quality and availability of wildlife habitats, using TEK to guide project creation and habitat management priorities
- Develops and implements habitat enhancement or restoration projects that reflect the needs identified through TEK-informed study designs
- Works with WFN to integrate findings into land-use planning and management practices
Data Analysis and Reporting:
- Analyzes data collected from field studies and monitoring programs to inform management decisions
- Prepares scientific reports, management plans, and policy recommendations based on research findings, highlighting the integration of TEK in study design
- Presents research outcomes to the Director of IGA/T&R, Chief and Council, and community
- Participates in the Referral Review Committees to help establish mitigation measures and specific details around wildlife and wildlife habitat
Community Engagement and Education:
- Engages with Elders, youth, and other community members to gather insights and integrate TEK into the design of studies and management projects
- Conducts educational workshops and outreach activities to enhance community understanding of wildlife management and conservation
- Fosters community involvement in wildlife research, ensuring that TEK informs the direction and scope of studies
Regulatory Compliance and Policy Development:
- Ensures that wildlife management activities comply with relevant regulations, including federal, provincial, and First Nation-specific laws
- Contributes to the development of wildlife policies and conservation strategies for Westbank First Nation
- Provides technical advice on wildlife-related regulatory submissions and reviews
- Works closely with IGA/T&R staff in developing policies and procedures for WFN
Project Management:
- Manages wildlife research and management projects, ensuring that TEK guides the study design and project planning phases
- Coordinates with other biologists, technicians, and external partners to achieve project goals
- Manages project timelines, resources, and deliverables in alignment with departmental and community objectives
- Engages with Referral Officers and proponents on WFNConnect (Referrals Database)
- Works closely with department Director of IGA/T&R in developing policies and procedures for WFN
Grant Writing and Fundraising:
- Identifies funding opportunities and prepare grant applications to support TEK-guided wildlife research and management activities
- Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Westbank First Nation policies, standards, and procedures, including the WFN Government Strategic Plan and the Community Comprehensive Community Plan, and as assigned by the Director of IGA/T&R.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Strong background and understanding of Indigenous issues
- Knowledge of Westbank First Nation
- Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and navigate using topographic and digital maps
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing including effective presentation skills
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment

- Working knowledge of the history of colonization in Canada and its ongoing impact on modern issues affecting Indigenous Peoples
- Working knowledge in communicating with Indigenous Peoples, demonstrating sensitivity and empathy, and awareness of how language choices can influence and impact conversations
