Job Profile
There is an opening for Utilities Trainee within the Environmental Services Division, Infrastructure Services Department. Reporting to the Supervisor of Water, the following duties apply:
What you will be doing
Works within the Utilities subdivision, performing repairs and maintenance on drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure, including watermains, valves, sewer mains, laterals and service connections.
Specific focus on installation of water, sewer, and storm servicing for new developments, and capping of redundant services. Repairs and/or preventative maintenance activities are performed on collection and distribution pipes as required.
Basic operation of equipment such as dump trucks, weigh scale, valve turner, and various hand tools (i.e. Shovel, rake, wrench, hammer, etc.)
All work performed is done under the supervision of licensed Utility Operators and/or Utilities Lead Hand.
Will gain basic awareness of all Water, Wastewater and Stormwater standard operating procedures, Wastewater Quality Management System, and other common corporate policies and procedures.
Comply with all applicable regulations and requirements of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, The Highway Traffic Act and City regulations including corporate, departmental, and divisional, policies and procedures.
Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, departments, and the public
Basic understanding of and experience with computers, tablets and work order systems.
Education
- High school graduation diploma
- Plus additional program/course(s) of up to six months or equivalent
- Possess initial Water Distribution and Waste Water Certification OITs (Operator-in-Training)
Minimum Requirements
- Must have a minimum of 6 to 12 months on the job experience
- Possess Valid DZ Driver’s License
Hours of Work
Regular hours of work for this position are Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. (40 hours per week) with the requirement to be available for overtime as needed.
Your compensation
This position is located within our CUPE 32 (outside workers union) compensation salary schedule Job Grade 2 and has an hourly rate of pay is as follows (2025 Rate):
Starting Rate: $29.56 per hour
12-Month Rate: $30.47 per hour
24-Month Rate: $31.39 per hour
Comprehensive Benefits Plan including medical, dental, vacation etc. along with Pension plan (OMERS Plan) is included.
