Underground Heavy-Duty Mechanic Apprentice
Position Description:
The Underground Heavy-Duty Mechanic Apprentice supports the maintenance team by assisting in the repair, service, and upkeep of underground mobile equipment. Working under the supervision of Journeyperson Mechanics and maintenance leadership, the apprentice is responsible for learning and applying safe work practices, developing technical skills, and contributing to equipment reliability in an underground mining environment.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with scheduled preventative maintenance (PMs) and unscheduled repairs on underground mobile equipment.
- Support mechanics in diagnosing issues and completing repairs to reduce equipment downtime.
- Learn to identify parts, tools, and materials needed for specific maintenance tasks.
- Accurately complete assigned documentation such as inspection checklists, work orders, and shift logs.
- Observe and begin to use Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software (e.g., SAP) for tracking work orders and equipment status.
- Follow instructions from journeyperson mechanics, leads, and supervisors to ensure safe and efficient task completion.
- Participate in daily housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Demonstrate a commitment to safety by following established procedures and participating in safety meetings and training.
- Engage actively in learning opportunities and hands-on skill development.
- Attend and participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and ongoing learning opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of the maintenance team.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a recognized Heavy Duty Equipment Technician apprenticeship or pre-apprenticeship program.
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent is required.
- Underground Common Core is considered an asset.
- Basic understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and safe work practices.
- Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to learn in a fast-paced underground mining environment.
- Physically fit and capable of working in confined spaces and varying underground conditions, including lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders, and performing physically demanding tasks.
- Must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with mine site safety protocols.
- Good communication skills and the ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Positive, team-oriented attitude with a desire to build a career in underground maintenance.
This is a residential position operating on a 7/7 rotation schedule, working 12-hour day and night shifts. The successful candidate must reside within commuting distance of the mine site, a local travel allowance is provided.
