As a Traffic Control Person & Assistant, you’ll play a key support role in helping our Traffic Control Instructors deliver an exceptional learning experience to future TCPs across BC.


In this dynamic role, you’ll have the opportunity to split your time between working as a Traffic Control Person (TCP) on active job sites and supporting our TCP Instructors during training courses. As a TCP & Instructor Assistant, you’ll be a key part of ensuring safe, high-quality training delivery. You’ll assist instructors during the practical components of TCP courses—helping with site setup, equipment adjustments, and student support—while also gaining hands-on experience in the field. This dual function not only strengthens your skill set but also plays a critical role in upholding UG’s high standards for safety, delivery, and training excellence.


What you will be responsible for:

Traffic Control

  • Collaborate with our experienced instructors to deliver high-quality training sessions in traffic control, safety, and regulations.
  • Participate in real-world traffic control activities to demonstrate proper procedures and techniques to the students.
  • Drive the company vehicle to and from training sites
  • Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of traffic control equipment, ensuring that it is in proper working condition.
  • Ensure that all safety protocols and procedures are followed during the training, and intervene if unsafe practices are observed.
  • Coordinate and participate in practical exercises and simulations to give students hands-on experience in traffic control procedures.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to course participants, answering questions and addressing their needs during the training.
  • Maintaining truck inventory and collaborating with the operations manager to ensure proper inventory management of equipment.

Traffic Control Setup:

  • Sets up traffic control zones and adjusts work zone equipment.
  • Gives traffic control directions and signals clearly and precisely so that motorists understand their meaning.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Responds to emergencies and hazards.
  • Effectively conducts traffic control at worksites within the abilities and experience of the training provided to protect workers, the public, and our employees.
  • Ensures traffic control capabilities meet or exceed requirements for quality, delivery, safety, and responsiveness.
  • Attends health and safety toolbox/tailgate meetings as required to discuss matters related to the worksite and work to conduct.
  • Participates in accident/incident investigations as necessary to ensure compliance with investigative policies and procedures.
  • Completes forms and reports required for due diligence and compliance with acts, regulations, standards, guidelines, policies, and procedures.

What we need from you:


  • Able to effectively communicate and de-escalate public frustrations.
  • Reports directly to the client's site supervisor and takes direction from them for traffic control setup and safety for the job site if there is no lane technician or traffic control supervisor from the prime contractor.
  • Reports to and takes direction from a lane control technician (LCT) or traffic control supervisor (TCS) and assists with the setup and tear down of the signs, delineation of equipment, and traffic control procedures, along with other related duties as required.
  • Reports to dispatch manager or health and safety coordinator, any health and safety matters, non-compliance issues, or conflicts with any employee or direction from the contractor.
  • Reports all accidents, incidents, and near misses immediately to the health and safety coordinator and completes all required reports and forms.
  • Class 5 valid drivers license.
  • Minimum 6 months of Traffic Control experience.
  • Valid BC TCP Certificate issued by a regulatory body.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the WorkSafeBC regulations for Traffic Control, Section 18.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the WCB Act, sections 115-117, General Duties.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Traffic Control Plans and the Traffic Control Manual for Work on Roadways developed by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the British Columbia Motor Vehicle Act requirements and regulations related to traffic control.

Where you will be working


  • Working outdoors.
  • Safety Sensitive Position.
  • Requires frequent use of hands for traffic control signals and handling equipment.
  • Involves exposure to low visibility or night work conditions, necessitating the use of a flashlight with a red signaling wand.
  • Regularly participates in work near moving mechanical parts, heavy equipment, and vehicular traffic in motion.
  • Requires standing for extended periods, bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing, and reaching as part of regular job tasks.
  • Exposes individuals to various environmental conditions and potentially reasonable noise levels.
  • Regular weekend work/additional days/hrs may be required.

The recruitment process for this role typically lasts 2 weeks and includes a phone interview, behavioural assessment and an In-person interview.
