Position Summary:
Reporting to the Associate Director, Buildings, the Theatre Technical Supervisor supports the Department of English’s annual theatre production by overseeing set construction, lighting, and sound. Directly supervise students, technicians, and casual staff. Manage tech week, training student crews (excluding costumes), supervising performances, and leading strike. Maintain theatre facilities—scene shop, stage, Front of House booth, and fly system—ensuring resource availability, enforcing safety and access protocols, advising on feasibility, managing purchases, and recommending equipment upgrades, while reporting issues as needed. The Theatre Technical Supervisor is responsible for organizing and costing the technical needs of the show. Must manage and direct the students and temporary crew. This includes audio teams, lighting teams, carpentry and props teams as well as supervising rigging and any special builds needed by the production. Directly supervise casual technical staff and students.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the scene shop, the stage, and stage environments (loading bay, fly-system, storage, booth, dimmer room, etc.)
  • Serve as Technical Lead for all Department of English theatre productions
  • Supervise and support of all events in Moyse Hall facility
  • Provide technical and administrative oversight and support in the delivery of courses that use Moyse Hall, as needed
  • Organize, schedule, and implement production activities in support of such course work
  • Oversee the maintenance, inventory, and storage of stock scenery elements, equipment, and properties
  • Track theatrical production-related assets such as theatre technical computer systems (inventory and aging), sound effect library, archival video library, show history database, supplier contacts, production archives, etc.
  • Document and maintain various interface and technical systems (Wi-Fi networks, electrical circuitry, audio interconnects)
  • Prepare stage and lighting layouts for performances and rehearsals. Set up equipment for the same.
  • Organize backstage, stage, and front-of-house operations
  • Oversee and assist in the production of rehearsals, performances, and related events
  • Supervise student technicians and/or casual technicians needed to assist in production
  • Organize, distribute, and verify the work of others and participate in their training.
  • Maintain production log of events.
  • Maintain scene shop and related equipment. Oversee and/or perform routine inspections and safety assessments. Schedule periodic and necessary maintenance. Ensure McGill health and safety standards are met and enforced.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
  • Must be able to facilitate and assist with theatre design and construction.
  • Must be able to work at heights and operate a Genie style work platform.
  • Must have a solid background in the use of standard shop tools (power and hand).
  • Must have experience using job related software such as Word and Excel.
  • CAD type drawing (Vectorworks or other), photoshop, and FileMaker a definite asset.
  • Must have a working knowledge of computer-based theatrical lighting and sound systems.
  • Must be able to instruct, assist, and supervise students in theatre labs.
  • Must be able to work within time and budget constraints.
  • Must be able to plan, organize, document, and co-ordinate all work related to the theatre, productions, student labs, and seasonal/periodical maintenance.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team is essential.
