Department Information

The Office of the Regulator and Oil and Gas Operations (OROGO) is an arms length organization under the Department of Justice. OROGO's mandate is to regulate the exploration for and exploitation of oil and gas resources for the primary purposes of ensuring human safety, environmental protection, and the conservation of those resources. OROGO has jurisdiction over the regulation of oil and gas works and activities in the onshore Northwest Territories (NWT), except for the Inuvialuit Settlement Region and lands that were not transferred from the Government of Canada to the Government of the Northwest Territories with devolution on April 1, 2014.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support regulatory decision-making with your technical and operational understanding of oil and gas exploration and development and the transportation of oil and gas using pipelines.

  • Use your knowledge of risk assessment procedures, risk management, and management system audits to review applications and conduct inspections, helping to manage the safety and environmental risks of oil and gas operations.

  • Share your knowledge of legislation, regulations, and polices that relate to the oil and gas industry to enhance oil and gas regulation in the NWT.

  • Help OROGO communicate with industry, other regulators, Indigenous governments and organizations, and the public about its mandate and activities.

Qualifications and Requirements

A degree in petroleum geology, engineering or natural resource management and two years of progressively more responsible experience with the oil and gas industry or government in safety, environmental or natural resource management.

Class 5 Driver's License

Eligibility for registration as a professional engineer or geologist is an asset.

Equivalencies

  • A diploma in environmental studies or natural resources management and four years of progressively more responsible experience with the oil and gas industry or government in safety, environmental or natural resource management. Class 5 Driver's License.
  • A diploma in engineering or geoscience technology and four years of progressively more responsible experience with the oil and gas industry or government in safety, environmental or natural resource management. Class 5 Driver's License.
