Student Assistant - Studios and Production Labs Wilson School of Design
Department: Wilson School of Design
Reports to: Divisional Business Manager
Summary:
To assist with the maintenance of the Studios and Production Labs in the Wilson School of Design. This position with work with faculty and students to ensure the proper use of the lab spaces and equipment as well as ensuring that materials are stocked and organized. As needed, the student will ensure that safety protocol is being followed, and students are using the space in a respectful and collegiate manner.
Principle Duties:
- Helping students with basic operation of equipment. This may include re threading of machines, identifying jammed machinery and asking for help, diagnosing machine problems to aid in faster repair times.
- Oversee sewing lab safety, including clean up, turning off equipment, communicating with faculty and students about safe use of facilities, and reporting unsafe conditions.
- Clean and organize space and materials, including donations from industry.
- Prepare samples and/or make prototypes.
- Assist Divisional Lab Coordinator, Program Assistant and Faculty with special projects such as setting up visual displays, providing tours to prospective students, documenting design process and/or end product.
Requirements:
- Understanding of equipment and operation procedures
- Awareness of risks and hazards relating to the use of equipment
- Basic knowledge of fabrics and notions
- Sewing and pattern drafting skills
- Strong organizational and self-management skills
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
This is a part-time position during the Fall and Spring terms; not to exceed 15 hours/week.
Salary Information
Student Assistants are paid as per the following:
- Less than one year of post-secondary (less than 30 credits) – BC Minimum Wage
- One year of post-secondary (30-60 credits) – BC Minimum Wage plus 8%
- With a post-secondary diploma or degree – BC Minimum Wage plus 21%
