Job Purpose
The Structural Estimator plays a critical role in securing new work by coordinating all aspects of bid preparation as well as work with internal stakeholders to refine estimates. This includes analyzing project documentation (Specifications, Drawings, Scope of work etc), preparing material takeoffs, evaluating subcontractor quotes, and compiling comprehensive pricing for formal submission to clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and analyze Request for Quotation (RFQ) documents with diligence and attention to detail.
- Distribute bid packages for internal review and gather feedback.
- Issue bid packages to subcontractors for pricing and delivery input.
- Complete and review Material Takeoffs (MTO) before sending out for supplier quotations.
- Compile and organize all pricing components.
- Provide comprehensive breakdowns of weights, hours, and weld lineal inches for review by management.
- Make supplier recommendations based on price, lead time, and any clarifications.
- Complete and verify Structural Takeoffs (STO); review junior estimators’ pricing and calculations for accuracy.
- Draft bid letters for supervisory review and approval.
- Submit completed bids to clients and respond to any follow-up questions or clarifications.
- Issue project handover emails for awarded contracts to the execution team.
- Lead internal kickoff meetings for larger awarded projects.
- Provide oversight and guidance to junior estimators on material takeoffs.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Master Service Agreements (MSAs).
- Assist in updating estimating procedures, databases, and templates under direction of the Estimating Manager.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
- Post-secondary education in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Estimating, Engineering, or a related discipline; a combination of relevant trade experience and technical education will also be considered.
- Preference will be given to candidates with both field and technical experience.
Experience
- 1–3 years of experience in structural estimating, preferably within the industrial fabrication or construction sectors.
Technical Skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Bluebeam.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, welding procedures, and applicable construction codes.
