About Large Tutoring
Large Tutoring Inc. is a small and growing business run by a UBC Chemical & Biological Engineering graduate committed to bringing top-level education to families in British Columbia. Our students have attended prestigious institutions such as NYU, UC Berkeley, UBC, UofT and much more. We strongly believe in a personalized approach to teaching as this allows us to focus on meeting the unique needs of each student to help them achieve their academic goals.
We pride ourselves on more than just academic excellence—we are committed to fostering curiosity, independence, and confidence in our students. Our tutors are not only subject matter experts, but also passionate educators who make learning both effective and enjoyable. We believe the best teachers are individuals who are professional but also enthusiastic about teaching as this encourages students to best engage with the material.
Our Values
To help our students navigate growing complexities in their courses, we ensure that they know exactly where the solutions are coming from. We don’t ask “what did we do?” but “why did we do it?” By understanding the “why”, we ensure that the next time around and every time after, students will be able to apply their knowledge to solve the problem, independently.
At Large Tutoring, we value being adaptable, trustworthy, qualified, modern, and friendly. If we share any of these values then you should consider applying!
Job Description: Science and Math Tutor
Are you passionate about sharing Science and Math subjects with youth from Grade 5 to high school and 1st year University? We are looking for individuals who are capable of conducting 60-90 minute tutoring sessions (sometimes 2+ hours) in a variety of subjects including Math, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics at all levels (AP and IB included).
This is an independent contractor position, as such, the wage will be $28.00 - $32.00 an hour for online lessons and $34.00 - $39.00 an hour for in-person lessons, depending on the level of education and experience. The wage is for time spent tutoring students. Anytime taken outside of normal lesson time to help students review documents such as lab reports, problem sets, or other types of assignments can be billed in 15 minute increments provided it takes over 15 minutes, and is pre-approved by the student. Tutors are expected to review any material they are unfamiliar with on their own time. Often, we conduct introductory meetings with students and their parents at no charge. The company will also hold ongoing check in meetings with the tutoring team. These meetings will all be paid at a non-premium wage of $17.85 an hour.
Ideal candidate(s) will start late August to early September 2025 working up to 10 hours a week with students (or more if the tutor desires). Lessons are divided into either in-person (e.g. at the student’s home, a local coffee shop, library, etc), or online (via Zoom, or Google Meets). It is mandatory that tutors will be able to conduct in-person tutoring within a specific geographical area in Calgary, Alberta. The geographical boundary can be discussed prior to contract signing.
Some lessons are also conducted online, depending on the students’ preference. Tutors are welcome to use any video conferencing platform of their choice, as long as it is easily accessible and user-friendly for students, does not time out during sessions, and can generate a meeting link we can put in our appointment reminders. We do supply Google Meets for all tutors. We are looking for candidate(s) who have the technological set up to work remotely from home, but who are also willing to transit to students’ homes or public locations (i.e. coffee shops, libraries, etc.).
The chosen candidate(s) will be required to complete a Police Information Check (PIC) for the vulnerable sector within one month of starting the position. The candidate will be responsible for covering the full cost of completing the PIC. This is the same background check required for parents to complete before volunteering at local schools.
The successful candidate(s) will guide students through the Alberta Curriculum, but will also adjust the lesson plan to cover additional concepts the students require explanation on. As we expand our service, the tutor may need to research applicable curricula online for different provinces or regions. These curricula will cover very similar topics just in different orders. The candidate(s) will also complete progress reports for their students at the end of every month.
Our students are our number one priority. We make an effort to get to know them and understand their unique academic needs. At Large Tutoring, our tutors understand their students and how best to support them. The successful candidate(s) must be able to show commitment, honesty, professionalism, organization, and enthusiasm when interacting with students and others in the company. In supporting our students, we also strive to accommodate all of our tutors to the best of our ability and ensure that they receive the support that they need to be the best they can be.
Responsibilities and Duties:
-Teach a variety of students varying from grade 5 to high school and First Year University for up to 10 hours a week. Preference will be given to those who can commit to more.
-Be available for introductory meetings, virtual video conferences, and phone calls with prospective students.
-Create brief lesson plans, “brush up” on any topics that will be covered in lessons, and assign homework materials for students (not worksheets, but suggested questions from the student's textbook, external resources, etc.).
-Willingness to answer students’ questions via email outside of lesson time under appropriate circumstances and timing (not to excessive amounts).
-Create progress reports for each student at the end of every month and send them to the parents.
-Be available to work during non-traditional hours. Since many students have school requirements, sessions may run into the evening (up to 10:00 PM) and/or take place on weekends. This will depend on the students on your roster and their availability. All sessions only take place at mutually agreed upon times and locations between the student and the tutor.
-Adapt, encourage, and provide feedback to students (and to parents) to achieve real life results.
Requirements:
-Higher Level education in Science and Math (including but not limited to: Bachelor’s of Science, Bachelor’s of Applied Science, Bachelor’s of Kinesiology, etc. Completed degree programs or degree programs in-progress are welcome to apply).
- Ability to conduct lessons for some or all of the following subjects: Math, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics at all levels (AP and IB included).
- Be able to conduct in person lessons in certain locations in Calgary, Alberta. (Preference will be given to those with a vehicle).
-Must be able to commit to 10 hours a week minimum throughout the entire school year (September to June). These hours cannot be reduced once a contract is signed.
-Extreme levels of enthusiasm, patience, kindness, and empathy for teaching and for students across diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. We also love bubbly personalities that contain enough energy for 2!
-Background in tutoring, teaching or mentoring is ideal (but desire to help and to succeed is also important). Experience in customer service and working for the benefit of your community is also valued.
-Ability to develop lesson plans with short notice.
-Experience working and/or willingness to work with students with learning difficulties, differences, or disabilities (ie. Gifted Learning Disabled, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, ADHD, or students on the autism spectrum).
-Excellent communication skills - in person and online - we want students to have fun!
-Work well independently and the ability to facilitate a group discussion.
-Strong multitasking and organizational abilities. Scheduling is something that the tutor is largely responsible for and keeping your schedules organized and up to date is crucial to your effectiveness as a teacher.
-Must have a computer/tablet with video conferencing capabilities, as well as a quiet space to video conference with their students OR be willing to do mostly in-person lessons. Preference will be given to individuals who have a tablet and stylus of some kind - though this is not a requirement.
-Flexible schedule and mindset. Our students often require a flexible schedule and we try our best to meet their needs while still keeping these accommodations within reason.
-Be able to join our onboarding training session within one week of signing the contract.
We look forward to hearing from you! We hope you bring passion, energy, enthusiasm, and fun to this position. Please send a cover letter and resume to apply.
