THE POSITION
Join us as a Backend Engineer and help power the technology behind Maple’s virtual care platform. In this role, you’ll be part of a cross-functional squad of engineers, product managers, and designers, solving real user problems and shipping features that improve healthcare access for millions of Canadians.
As a Backend Engineer, you’ll contribute to the design and implementation of Laravel-based services, write clean and maintainable code, and collaborate with your squad to deliver features end-to-end. You’ll gain exposure to system architecture, observability, and performance improvements while developing your technical expertise and product thinking.
If you care about quality, take pride in your work, and want to build products that people actually use and love, this is an opportunity to grow your skills while making a meaningful impact.
YOUR IMPACT
- Contribute to backend services built with Laravel (PHP) that directly support patient and provider experiences.
- Collaborate within your squad to design, build, and ship new features that balance technical soundness with user impact.
- Write clean, maintainable, and testable code that improves the reliability and scalability of our platform.
- Participate in code reviews and team discussions, helping to raise the bar for quality while learning from more senior engineers.
- Use AI tools thoughtfully in your workflow — from code generation to debugging — while ensuring outputs meet quality standards.
- Support improvements in observability, performance, and developer experience across our systems.
3 – 18 MONTH DELIVERABLES
In your first 3 months, you’ll get hands-on with our Laravel codebase, contribute to shipping your first features, and learn how our squads work. You’ll gain context on our platform, development practices, and the healthcare problems we’re solving.
By 12–18 months, you’ll be a trusted contributor on larger projects, owning features or backend components from design through to deployment. You’ll have strengthened your Laravel expertise, improved system performance in measurable ways, and built strong working relationships across engineering, product, and design.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
- 3+ years of production-level experience with Laravel (PHP) — you’ve built and maintained applications in Laravel, shipping features that real users depend on.
- Solid backend fundamentals — knowledge of APIs, databases, caching, and distributed systems concepts, with eagerness to deepen your expertise.
- Commitment to code quality — you write clean, maintainable code and value testing, reviews, and continuous improvement.
- Collaboration skills — you’re comfortable working in squads or cross-functional teams to deliver features end-to-end.
- Growth mindset — you’re eager to learn from senior engineers, take on increasing responsibility, and build your product thinking.
- AI fluency — you know how to leverage AI tools to accelerate tasks responsibly while staying accountable for results.
- Familiarity with modern tooling — Git, CI/CD, cloud environments (AWS preferred), and openness to learning new tools as needed.
- Backend: Built on Laravel PHP framework, with multiple integration services, such as Langfuse.
- Frontend: React Native Web for a unified codebase across web and mobile, Typescript and styled components; we also leverage Alpine, Livewire and Tailwind.
- Databases: Multi-database architecture with MySQL 8 and Amazon DocumentDB, Redis for caching, and Typesense for search engine indexing.
- Infrastructure & DevOps: Containerized, auto-scaling architecture built on top of AWS; Infrastructure-as-Code setup with Terraform and GitHub Actions.
- Testing & QA: We utilize a number of testing tools for unit, integration, end-to-end and accessibility testing, such as PHPUnit, Jest, WebDriverIO, and axe-core.
- Other Tools & Services: Monitoring and observability with Datadog, project management done through Jira, and BugSnag for bug tracking.
