Position Summary
Illness can have a significant life changing effect on individuals and their families. Social work provides service to patients and their families focusing primarily on the psychological and the emotional well-being of individuals as they adjust to the changes in their health. Social Work advocates on behalf of patients and families as they move through the health care system. Responsibilities include: biopsychosocial assessment, problem formulation, assisting in the development, implementation and ongoing monitoring of patient treatment plans including discharge planning, crisis intervention, and knowledge of community resources. In addition, social work is an educational resource to patients, families, staff and community agencies. The Social Worker practices in accordance with the OCSWSSW Professional Standards.
RMH is currently looking for a Temporary Full-Time Social Worker - BSW to join their healthcare team.
Effective Date: June 30, 2025
Ending on or before Date: January 05, 2026
Essential Qualifications
- BSW
- Member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) in good standing
- Advanced knowledge of psychogeriatric issues
- Proven knowledge of current acute care and senior issues
- Experience as a Social Work in an acute care setting
- 3-5 years recent (within 3 years) clinical experience in care of the elderly
- Clinical knowledge and skills related to mental health, consent and capacity, addictions and neurological conditions (diagnosis, signs and symptoms, treatment) as they apply to the older adult
- Excellent critical thinking skills for early detection, intervention and prevention of responsive behaviours including PIECES certification
- Proven decision-making, problem recognition and problem solving skills; effective conflict resolution skills; and demonstrated understanding of and commitment to RMH’s comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety and environmental safety.
- Proven skill and experience in the assessment methodology and management of determining capacity
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated organizational skills
- Extensive knowledge of community and multi-disciplinary resources, providing linkage to the appropriate services necessary to best serve the client
- Current BCLS required
- Experience teaching in a classroom or clinical setting
- Knowledge of the principles of adult education and teaching/learning principles
- Experience in developing clinical tools such as policies/procedures
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of research activities
- Proficient with computer programs including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Meets RMH Attendance management standards
- Must be able to fulfill physical requirement of the job, as per current Physical Demands Analysis
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills and independent practice
- Enhanced knowledge of family and caregiver needs by a behavioural support system
- Good understanding of non- pharmacological and therapeutic behavioural approaches.
- Advanced understanding of dementia and the ability to assess the unique impact of the disease (i.e. amnesia, agnosia, aphasia, altered perception etc.), and a thorough understanding of the concept of “Responsive Behaviours” and behavioural expression as a form of communication
Hours of Work
Thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hours per week. Program initially scheduled on Monday to Friday, including extended daily hours or flexible hours to accommodate patient/family needs. Occasional weekend coverage on an as needed basis. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the OPSEU Collective Agreement.
