JOB SUMMARY
The Retail Lending Underwriter is responsible for the underwriting, processing and approval of on-line applications and broker referrals. The incumbent will analyze, review and approve credit applications within authorized limits, obtaining exceptions where necessary, ensuring that applicable legislation, regulations, policies and procedures are followed. The Retail Lending Underwriter will also support the Manager, Residential Underwriting in other credit processes.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead by example through commitment and adherence to YNCU’s Mission, Vision and Values and Principled Leadership Model
- Underwrite complex and conforming mortgage applications. Strong ability to review, analyze and verify mortgage application information including the analysis of financial statements, income documentation, property assessments, appraisals and credit bureaus to ensure accuracy, while ensuring adherence to YNCU policies and guidelines and external lender guidelines/insurers (CMHC & Sagen).
- Provide sound credit approvals and use discretion prudently to minimize overall delinquency while balancing the needs of the member and YNCU with a focus on providing win-win solutions.
- Establish and maintain professional relationships and effective communication with branch staff and outside referral sources including but not limited to brokers
- Effectively communicate applicable YNCU lending policies and procedures and instil thorough knowledge of lending requirements to third party referral sources, namely mortgage brokers.
- Review and analyze credit applications to ensure accuracy of data, credit worthiness and profitability for the Credit Union in compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, policies, procedures, pricing matrix and lending authority
- Confer with brokers to aid in resolving credit application problems/concerns
- Assist in the content and delivery of lending-specific training
- Assist with file reviews
- Refer applications to and seek approval for credit exceptions from Manager, Retail Lending or designate as appropriate
- Attend meetings as required
- Provide excellent client service to internal and external parties
- Handle complaints/issues at first point of contact as required and take appropriate action to resolve them
- Provide a timely response to brokers to achieve exceptional turn-around time and management of expectations
- Identify areas for improvement within the lending unit and bring forward solutions for discussion, review and solutions to the Manager, Retail Lending
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of policies and procedures as they pertain to the operations of Lending Services
- Provide input to the Manager, Retail Lending with suggestions for improvement of lending policies, procedures, documentation, products and services to strengthen YNCU’s performance
- Abide by YNCU policies, procedures, standards, guidelines and practice
- Collaborate as a team member demonstrating the four essentials of colleague care (Trust, Respect, Teamwork and Empathy)
- Work safely in accordance with YNCU’s Health & Safety Policy, procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act as amended from time to time
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post secondary diploma, degree and/or certification in business, business administration or a related program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum three (3) years experience working in a financial institution in a lending services role preferably in a broker unit
- Possess strong practical understanding of underwriting guidelines and compliance requirements, with a proven ability to underwrite complex credit.
- Fully proficient with consumer and mortgage lending as well as having a general knowledge of available financial services products & services
- Must have a valid Ontario driver's licence and reliable available vehicle
- Must be bondable
