Fife House is an innovative, client-focused provider of secure and supportive affordable housing and services to people living with HIV/AIDS in the Greater Toronto Area. With approximately 110 staff working across 6 locations, in 2020-2021, Fife House served more than 850 residents and clients by providing supportive and transitional housing programs as well outreach programs to homeless clients and their families.

Fife House is seeking a dedicated individual to fill the role of Residential Support Worker positions across a number of our programs. As a member of the team, the Residential Support Worker will provide front-line client-centred and trauma-informed care to Fife House residents/clients across service locations, in alignment with unique program needs and fulfillment of relevant funding deliverables.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Residential Supportive Housing Workers support tenants to maintain their housing, develop independent living skills, and pursue personal wellness;

Communication:

○ Reporting changes in client status or safety concerns to the supervising Program Manager, RSW, RN/RPN or such other designate

○ Conduct in-person and telephone supportive counselling;

○ Intervene in crisis situations using a suite of de-escalation techniques;

○ Documentation and entry into software programs;

○ Reporting changes in client behaviour and condition

○ Documenting of care and client goals/preferences

Client Care

○ Assist/participate in Case Management;

○ Assist/participate in Community Health Assessments and Coordinated Care Plans;

○ Provide medication assistance and coordinate appointments with external supports;

○ Oversee a portfolio of clients in partnership with external housing providers and workers;

○ Advocate to increase the quality of life of clients;

○ Distribute Harm Reduction products and provide counselling where necessary;

○ Responsible for all household duties: meal preparation, cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, laundry, sanitizing bedrooms and washrooms, garbage disposal, etc.

○ Purchase and maintain inventory of groceries and household supplies

○ Provide coaching and life skills teaching to clients within a residential setting where appropriate

○ Assist with client intake process as needed

○ Prompt clients in regards to personal care

○ Plan and participate with clients in social, recreational and vocational activities

○ Life skills coaching and support Activities of Daily Living (ADL) & Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLS)

Psycho-Social and spiritual support:

○ Respects clients' wishes, beliefs and spiritual practices

○ Moderates approach based on client preferences and mood

○ Care of the Fife House, Supplies and Equipment

○ Assist with clients' well-being, i.e. mental health, behavioural, physical, emotional etc.

○ Collaborate with the Crisis Intervention Worker team around matters of client support and care

○ Assist with providing crisis support as required

Follow policies, procedures and protocols to:

○ Maintain a tidy and safe workplace, including engaging in appropriate infection control practices

○ Laundry: including all tasks involved in the preparation and operation of the laundry for the facility and occasional inclusion of resident items

○ Stocking of resident rooms for supplies and linens

○ Participation in fire drills and mock emergency drills

Other

○ Participates in the orientation and ongoing education of Fife House staff, students and volunteers

○ Complies with all the company policies and Procedures, Infection Control protocols and Occupational Health and Safety policies

○ Participates in bedside rounds Light housekeeping duties such as room cleaning and laundry support

○ Participate in the ongoing client assessment process

○ Support team delivery of individual client service and care plan

QUALIFICATIONS:

● A minimum of a Community College Diploma in a field relevant to the target population (SSW, CSW, ACSW, SW, PSW);

● A minimum of 2 years of direct or transferable experience suitable to working effectively with people living in Supportive Housing / Shelter environments;

● Knowledge of community resources relevant to the target population being served and/or demonstrated ability to search for applicable resources/information;

● Good working knowledge and commitment to harm reduction, risk reduction, equity and diversity, anti-racism and anti-oppression principles and practices;

● Good crisis management and dispute resolution skills;

● Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written);

● Basic computer literacy (Word, E-mail, Internet);

● Experience in community mental health and/or working with people who are marginally housed;

● Experience creating safety plans with at-risk clients;

● Basic understanding of different psychiatric conditions;

● Experience working with addiction is preferable;

ASSET:

● Knowledge of HIV infection in the current context, including the impact of stigma and discrimination

● Experience working with people who come from diverse racial, gender, ethnic and cultural backgrounds and who have experienced varying degrees of mental health, social isolation and substance use

● Knowledge of Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and skill training

● Comfortability with light cleaning and grounds keeping

● Food Handlers Certification

● Naloxone Training
