Job Summary
This research and facilitation position will provide general, administrative, financial, and research-oriented support to the clinical trials and other investigator initiated research studies performed in the Division of Gastroenterology at British Columbia Children s Hospital, focusing on Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Organizational Status
The successful candidate will report directly to Dr. Kevan Jacobson and Dr. Sally Lawrence, the heads of the research group, and will work in a strongly collaborative and collegial fashion with cross-functional project team members to meet program goals and objectives. The successful candidate will work in the Division of Gastroenterology, BC Children’s Hospital, with both remote and on-site work.
Work Performed
  • Assisting in the preparation, submission and tracking of ethics applications and other applications.
  • Collaborating with pharmaceutical sponsors and healthcare staff and interacting with patients and families to conduct phase III clinical trials
  • Assisting with preparation of research grant applications.
  • Assisting with research protocol implementation: data collection, data entry, documentation of process, integration, evaluation, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Conducting computerized literature searches as needed.
  • Assisting in preparation of presentations and posters.
  • Creating budgets, tracking expenses, and submitting invoices
  • Preparing documents, including correspondence, grants, manuscripts, reports, newsletters.
  • Taking, transcribing and distributing minutes related to research activities (i.e. research-related committees; teleconferences).
  • Formatting letters, tables and charts.
  • Onboarding, supervising, and monitoring co-op students and volunteers in the research group
  • Performing light processing and shipping of biospecimens
  • Performing other related duties as required.

It is expected that the candidate will require additional training for some aspects of the work (such as ethics preparation) and appropriate training will be provided as needed
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The successful candidate should carefully report all experimental results for analysis by the principal investigator. All works are subject for review by Dr. Kevan Jacobson. Incorrect analysis would negatively affect the study and the reputation of the research group.

Supervision Received
This position will report directly to Dr. Kevan Jacobson, the head of the division, and will work in a strongly collaborative and collegial fashion with cross-functional project team members to meet program goals and objectives.

Supervision Given
The individual will oversee the work of two or more individuals at a lower classification. The individual will provide technical help and training to summer students, graduate students, or co-op students.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline preferred. One year of recent related experience in a research environment or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Ability to effectively use MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. High degree of computer literacy with ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, internet and electronic mail applications at an intermediate level. Experience with database management, REDCap, RISe, online literature searches and web-based applications (including WordPress) an asset. Ability to take and transcribe accurate meeting minutes and follow up on action items with ease. Superior organizational skills. Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, and multi-tasking skills. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Attentive to detail, with the ability to work quickly and accurately. Ability to exercise tact and discretion when handling sensitive and/or confidential matters.
