POSITION SUMMARY:
This role is an integral part of service delivery for residents and visitors of Loyalist Township.
Reporting to the Recreation Program Coordinator, Recreation Instructors will facilitate identified recreation programs, providing participants with an opportunity to acquire new knowledge and skills in a variety of general or special interest activities in a friendly, engaging, and caring environment. Programs include active and inactive instruction opportunities ranging from such experiences as art classes to physical activity classes.
The delivery of these programs plays a key role in building a strong community as part of the Corporate Strategic Plan by strengthening and promoting quality of life, health and wellbeing.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide a fun and safe environment for patrons.
- Demonstrate exceptional customer service.
- Enforce recreation rules and policies in a polite and professional manner.
- Plan, implement and instruct the identified program in accordance with the recreation procedures and standards. Provide program adaptations as needed to meet the needs of all participants.
- Setup any needed equipment before classes start ensuring all equipment is in good working order. Clean up equipment when sessions are completed ensuring program space is clean and safe for the next program. Report any equipment malfunctions or safety issues to Supervisor.
- Develop positive and professional relationships with participants.
- Take responsibility for the maintenance and cleanliness of program areas.
- Responsible to take attendance and fill out incident/accident forms when required.
- Participate in staff training including emergency procedures and response training.
- Work as part of a team, communicate effectively with staff, volunteers and participants in all situations.
- Other duties as assigned.
- *Note: All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Standard First Aid; CPR-C Certification (or willing to obtain)
- Enrollment in, or completion of, post-secondary education in Recreation and Leisure Services, or possession of specialized education, training, or certification related to the identified programs, is considered an asset.
- HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development Certification, considered an asset
- HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Aging Certification, considered an asset
Experience
- Previous customer service experience
- Experience working in a recreation instructional position, considered an asset
- Experience working in a similar position in a municipal setting, considered an asset
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
- Exhibit outstanding public relations skills in all interactions.
- Passionate about providing exceptional customer service experiences.
- Highly self motivated and able to work independently in a team environment with a demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships.
- Ability to take initiative and complete work in a detail oriented and timely manner.
- Ability to effectively multi-task
- Ability to make quick decisions
- Ability to command authority when providing direction to participants
- Ability to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays.

Other Requirements
- Reliable transportation
- Obtain and maintain satisfactory vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check (CPIC).
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Daily communication with Recreation and Municipal staff
External: Daily interaction with Township residents and patrons
WORK CONDITIONS:
- Work is frequently conducted indoors, with occasional duties performed in outdoor environments.
- Recreation Instructors may have noise from other classes, outdoors (lawn mowers, construction), cleaning chemicals are used daily to clean post session. Weather conditions for outdoor programs such as Come Out & Play trailer, summer programs, winter programs and outdoor events.
- Required to lift supplies, setup program spaces (tables/chairs, 10’x10’ event pop-up tent), must be able to lift 50 lbs.
