Battery Boost is an innovative training program funded by Upskill Canada [powered by Palette Skills] and the Government of Canada. Administered by Invest WindsorEssex with delivery support from NextStar Energy, this program is designed to prepare participants for careers as Production Technicians in electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing. Through advanced Virtual Reality (VR) simulations, participants gain hands-on, job-specific training that equips them with the skills needed to thrive in Canada’s rapidly growing EV battery manufacturing sector. The program offers paid training, aiming to help candidates secure a permanent role as a Production Technician after successful completion of the program. Those who do not successfully complete the program’s requirements will have the opportunity for additional unpaid training to support a career in the EV supply chain. There are no direct costs to participate in the Battery Boost program.

NextStar Energy (NSE) is an innovative joint venture company between LG and Stellantis. It will be Canada's first large-scale lithium-ion battery production plant when it begins production at the Twin Oaks site in Windsor, Ontario. The manufacturing facility will have an annual targeted production capacity in excess of 49 gigawatt hours and will create an estimated 2,500 new jobs in Windsor and the surrounding areas.

As a Production Technician, you will support operations, handle materials, and use advanced systems to ensure quality, safety, and efficiency in our production processes. Your role includes performing routine inspections, troubleshooting, and collaborating with a dynamic team to meet our goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Driving forklift and move goods/material (for outbound forklift, Inbound forklift)
  • Using pallet jacks – manual and electric
  • Manually moving material over 50lbs
  • Lift material over 70lbs with 2 person lift
  • Using various computer systems including excel, PowerPoint and specific NSE programs
  • Continuous walking & standing (8-12 hours per day with required breaks)
  • Working autonomously and completing tasks based on specific job assignments by supervision and management
  • Work at a pace that meets demand of the lines
  • Working on multiple tasks based on standardized instruction and training
  • Will be trained and required to function across all jobs within the department
  • Will be required to complete all 5S activities to maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • You will be required to actively clean equipment and surrounding areas as part of your daily requirements
  • Will be required to support inventory counting
  • Will be required to learn and use various production systems (GMES, HMI controls) as well as PDAs and scanners
  • Will be required to complete quality inspections and proper decisions on part status using all required quality check tools.
  • Engage in, support and drive continuous improvement
  • Will be required to respond to and correct basic automation and manual problems and escalate as needed.
  • Adhere to all safety rules, wear all PPE and additional items as required at all times including required surgical mask and latex or Nitrile gloves Please note: No exposed metal or jewelry is allowed on the production floor. This includes rings, bracelets, watches, necklaces, earrings, or any other form of metal or jewelry that could pose a safety or contamination risk during production processes. No mobile phones or personal electronic devices are permitted on the production floor to ensure safety and minimize distractions.

Requirements:

  • Must have basic skills with Windows, Microsoft including Excel and Powerpoint
  • Must be able to work 12-hour shifts which include walking, bending, twisting, lifting and other physical requirements.
  • Must be able to work continental style 12 hour shifts.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changes in daily tasks or work priorities as required by evolving production schedules or operational needs.
  • Must have high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must be able to read and write in English
  • Strong communication skills within a team and departments

Preferred Requirements:

  • Previous forklift experience
  • Previous experience with automation lines
  • Previous experience with GMES or HMI
