The Parent Support Worker will assist the Maternal Child Health Program by improving health outcomes for pregnant women and families with infants and young children, by focusing on culture, role-modeling and healthy teachings by linking community resources. About the position: Working 7.5 - hour shifts (Overtime may be required). S/he will provide in-home support such as basic infant care, infant stimulation, fostering healthy child development, self-care and coping as a parent, offering hands-on approach to learning and supportive mentoring as a peer. Advocate, refer and act as a liaison for families. Work closely with Health Care Professionals and Public Health Nursing & Health Team to provide and deliver programs and services.


Duties:

  • In-home support, utilizing a strength-based model with families who have children between the ages of 0-6 years;
  • Teach individuals and group about health promotion topics;
  • Assist the Community Health Nurse to provide and deliver programs and services;
  • Advocate, refer and act as a liaison for families;
  • Work closely with other Health Care Professionals;
  • planning and delivering workshops, community education events;
  • Developing of appropriate awareness materials; administering the nutrition coupon program;

Qualifications:

  • Early Childhood Education Certificate (Combination of Education and experience may be considered);
  • Growing Great Kids (GGK) Curriculum training is an asset or willing to obtain;
  • Certified First Aide & CPR and Safe Food Handling Certificate required or willing to obtain;
  • Personal experience as a parent or caregiver of infants &/or young children, is an asset;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Able to work independently, be self-directed and demonstrate organizational skills;
  • The ability to speak/understand Cree a definite asset;
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License;
  • Experience working with First Nations Communities is an asset;
