This role is to provide support and direct care to children in the Licensed Care Program, encouraging intellectual, physical and emotional growth. Experience working with and supporting individuals with diverse needs, as well as individuals with autism is required.
Reports to: Childcare Coordinator
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides support and direct care (in Licensed Care) to a child or children with identified increased needs, encouraging their intellectual, physical and emotional growth and giving them the best chance possible to succeed in Quadra Village Community Childcare
- Implements developmentally appropriate activities to program participants
- Supports children attending the program who are having challenges, collaborating with other Leaders and Supervisors, to work with them on useful skills through modeling, mentoring, teachable moments and supportive conversations
- Ensures the program environments are clean, safe, suitable, caring, respectful and inclusive
- Ensures compliance with all safety and security protocols related to the Childcare environment, including the administration of emergency preparedness drills
- Supports and delivers communication from the Supervisor or agency to parents, caregivers, schools and relevant agencies.
- Maintains awareness of participant feedback and integrates constructive feedback in practice/programs
- Ensures the maintenance and tabulation of attendance and incident logs regarding the program, and makes regular written and verbal reports as required by Childcare Licensing and the Supervisor
- Implements the Policies and Procedures of Quadra Village Community Centre (QVCC), as well as those specific to the Community Childcare program
- Responds to general inquiries, by phone and in person regarding QVCC and the Childcare program, and shared in the work of operating and maintaining a respectful, inclusive, functional, and useful community centre
- Participates to ensure a safe environment; observes potential hazards; remedies and/or reports to the appropriate person
- Performs other related duties when required and approved by the Supervisor or Executive Director
Qualifications:
- Commitment to anti-oppressive, decolonial, and anti-racist practice.
- Experience working with and supporting individuals with diverse needs, as well as skills specific to working with individuals with autism, is required
- Ability to work with integrity and respect in a diverse, multi-culture community centre
- Must be a minimum of 19 years of age, due to Licencing requirements
- High School graduation
- Experience and/or education directly related to school aged childcare, summer camp, recreation, child and youth development, developmentally appropriate activities, behavior management and group supervision are all considered an asset for this position.
- Food Safe Certified, or willingness to obtain
- First Aid and CPR, or willingness to obtain
- 20 Hours Responsible Adult Certificate or minimum 20 hours of recognized training/course work in child development, guidance, nutrition, or health and safety. QVCC may provide formal training or coursework for the successful candidate
- Class 4 Driver’s Licence, or willingness to obtain (preferred but not required)
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal and collaborative ability
Benefits and Remuneration:
- $21.69 per hour
- Additional 6% vacation pay, paid out each pay period
- This position is dependent upon receiving the funding designated for the role. Until such funding is received, hours for the program will be limited based on available funding to staff positions
- Immediate enrollment in the Employee and Family Assistance Program
- Paid Training and/or Workshops applicable to position
Hours of Work
- 4-20 hours per week, dependent on program needs
- Shifts occur Monday to Friday
- Shift scheduling is based on individual’s availability, yet a 5 day per week commitment is preferred due to providing increased stability for the child/children.
