Position Description:
The Mental Health Support Worker works from an anti-oppressive framework to provide mental health support on behalf of the Agency to women in the community and in custodial settings. This takes on a variable amount of responsibilities including, but not limited to, individual counselling, program delivery, skills development and support in daily living, assistance in recreational activities and independent exercise/leisure, referrals for self-identified needs (i.e., vocational, parenting, etc.), accompaniment to activities external to the Agency, and institutional visits. A primary component of this role is to liaise regularly with the Case Management Team and provide ongoing mental health assistance and counselling to women in the Community Residential Facility, at both provincial and federal levels. Further, the Mental Health Support Worker plays an integral role in the development of new programming on an ongoing basis.
Qualifications:
A post-secondary diploma or degree in Social Sciences field;
A minimum of two (2) years’ experience working with women in the criminal justice system;
Up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, such as Criminal Code of Canada, Correctional and Conditional Release Act, Ontario Mental Health Act, as well as standards and policies, such as National Parole Board policies and Community Residential Facility Standards;
Familiarity with anti-oppressive philosophies and frameworks;
Active awareness of the Elizabeth Fry Society, including history and the Agency’s current role within the community;
Commitment to and experience with women’s intersecting needs and systemic issues;
Strong interviewing and analytical skills;
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
Possible flexibility in hours;
Driver’s License, current CPIC
