The Snaw-Naw-As Health Centre at Nanoose First Nation is seeking a hardworking, reliable, and compassionate individual to join our team as a Medical Transportation Clerk. This full-time position plays a vital role in supporting community members in accessing health-related transportation services.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The Medical Transportation Clerk is responsible for providing safe, reliable, and respectful transportation services to eligible members of the Nanoose First Nation under the existing Medical Transportation Program. Transportation may include both local and out-of-town trips, and must align with the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) and Nanoose First Nation (NFN) Medical Transportation policies.
The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Health Director and must demonstrate flexibility in adapting to a variable weekly schedule based on community and health appointment needs.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Administration
- Maintain accurate trip records, including daily odometer readings and travel logs.
- Ensure regular scheduled and preventative maintenance of program vehicles, including fueling at the end of each workday and completing pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections
- Submits a monthly report detailing trip expenditures and particulars to their Manager and assists with other program submission requirements
- Support community members in completing FNHA Patient Transportation forms, ensuring all required documentation is accurate and submitted to facilitate access to medical travel benefits.
- Collaborate with the health team, families, and external service providers to coordinate transportation for medical appointments, ensuring arrangements are timely, efficient, and culturally appropriate.
- Liaises with other staff with proper courtesy and teamwork
Transportation Conduct & Safety Guidelines:
- Drivers may refuse transportation to individuals who appear to be under the influence of alcohol or narcotics to ensure the safety of all passengers.
- Unauthorized stops are not permitted during scheduled medical transportation runs unless prior approval has been granted
- Family members or friends may not accompany clients during medical transportation unless they are formally identified as required patient support, which must be documented and pre-approved.
- Drivers are not responsible for supervising children during waiting periods, unless they have explicitly agreed to do so.
- Provide assistance to patients with disabilities or limited mobility, ensuring safe and respectful support during transportation to and from medical appointments
Other Related Duties:
- The Medical Transportation Clerk must make every reasonable effort to arrange a back-up driver in the event they are unavailable to provide scheduled transportation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor, related to the role of Medical Transportation Clerk or in support of the broader Health Team as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Grade 12 or equivalent experience
- Must possess a valid class 5 driver’s license
- Must provide clear Drivers Abstract and demonstrate 3-5 years of driving experience in different environments (eg. highway, city) and under various weather conditions
- Current Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Search required (if position offered)
Specialization required:
- Certified in the “Transportation of Dangerous Goods” and maintain this certification as required or willing to obtain
- CPR and First Aid, and AED; ongoing renewal as required to maintain current certification;
- Proof of up to date Immunization records upon hire
Considered an asset:
- Knowledge and understanding of Native culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics;
- Initiative and ability to work independently to meet deadlines;
- Ability to analyze problems, recommend and implement solutions;
- Good interpersonal skills to deal with First Nation residents.
Preferred Experience:
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic automotive mechanics;
- Knowledge of local and out of town medical facility locations;
- Must have experience in highway and inner-city driving;
- Must be able to follow BC road maps and GPS systems;
- Must obey all traffic regulations including transportation of infants in an approved child safety seat and passengers must wear seatbelts;
- Must have basic knowledge and skills of computers for reporting purposes.
