Looking for a new and exciting job opportunity? We are looking for a Manager, Sustainability Strategy to join our Sustainable Innovation Department! As part of the Sustainable Innovation team, you will be responsible for the strategic planning and management of the TTC’s Sustainability Strategy. Come join our team during this exciting time!

What You Will Do


You will report to the Head of Sustainable Innovation and lead the strategic planning of sustainability initiatives for TTC’s assets and facilities. This includes integrating sustainability into the management of transit vehicle fleets and infrastructure by enhancing building system operations, optimizing resource efficiency, and identifying opportunities to reduce environmental impact.

This also involves the following:

  • Develop necessary programs, high level business cases, scope of work, and supporting project change requests, budgets, and schedules to progress actions from the Innovation and Sustainability Strategy.
  • Conduct portfolio-wide and site-specific studies to assess current conditions, processes, challenges, and opportunities such as net zero transition plans in support of City of Toronto’s TransformTO mandate of net zero by 2040.
  • Prepare high level vehicle fleet plans which include but are not limited to the reflection of ridership growth projections from service planning, vehicle procurement and overhaul plans, capital budgeting and scheduling plans, and operating budget impacts.
  • Oversee and maturing operational energy retrofit and water conservation programs from the Energy Management Plan and water audits that result in immediate benefits (cost savings, improved site conditions).
  • Maximize the benefits of TTC’s natural spaces through enhancing the tree canopy and landscaping, integrating indigenous practices where possible, to provide shade, reduce stormwater runoff, maximize ecological benefits, and progress place-making efforts.
  • This includes establishing partnerships and agreements with other organizations such as City of Toronto.
  • Promote a culture of sustainability at the TTC, including leading annual earth week events, and support opportunities for engaging staff, and the community on the benefits of TTC’s green initiatives and the importance of taking the TTC to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Responsible for reporting including project summary reports, project expenditure reports, as well as the Innovation and Sustainability Strategy annual progress report.
  • Provide technical sustainability guidance to staff, and projects (e.g. design reviews, reporting alignment with corporate sustainability best practices).
  • Lead procurement and management of external consultants as required.
  • Manage the development of educational and training materials to foster a culture of sustainability.
  • Consult and liaising with various stakeholders to understand and capture all fleet and facility requirements; communicating, reporting, and presenting integrated multi-modal fleet and green facility plan to various stakeholders.
  • Develop and delivering presentations to senior leadership tables, Executives, and TTC Board as required.
  • Provide day to day strategic guidance, and overall developing a high performing team with a shared vision.
  • Developing resource plans, justifications, and conducting recruitment.

What Qualifications Do You Bring

  • A university degree or college diploma in a relevant field such as Environmental Studies, Engineering, Economics, or Urban Planning, combined with progressive management experience in related functions. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will also be considered.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing sustainability programs and strategies.
  • Background in working with large public agencies or private sector organizations to integrate environmental sustainability into design, capital planning, operations, and policy development.
  • Solid understanding of fleet planning concepts and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and track environmental sustainability key performance indicators (KPIs) and targets, with experience in reporting on progress.
  • Experience in corporate sustainability and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting, with a strong grasp of relevant frameworks and best practices.
  • Knowledge of project management and strategic planning principles, particularly in relation to construction projects, vehicle allocation, green initiatives, and operational constraints.
  • Strong leadership and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to foster effective working relationships and drive progress toward strategic goals.
  • Demonstrated supervisory and managerial capabilities, including the ability to guide and motivate teams to achieve objectives.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to negotiate, influence, resolve conflicts, and solve problems effectively.
  • Advanced skills in report writing, research, analysis, and project management, including the ability to synthesize technical data for diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in using a range of software applications, including presentation tools, databases, spreadsheets, word processing, and digital platforms for business continuity.
