Position Description


Manager, Clinical Research

Department of Critical Care Medicine


A full-time Clinical Research Manager position is available in the Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) at the Hospital for Sick Children.


The Research Manager is responsible for the day-to-day research-related operations and oversight of the research staff of the Critical Care Research Support (CCRS) division. The Research Manager also oversees the research team members affiliated with DCCM clinician-scientists. The Research Manager serves as a central resource to clinician-scientists and interdisciplinary team members, leading and participating in research. The DCCM supports, on average, a dozen clinical research labs/teams and 30 active enrolling studies, including Health Canada-regulated trials.

General responsibilities involve enhancing the research culture, environment, awareness, and knowledge about research among all staff.

Here's What You'll Get To Do:

  • Supervise research staff and clinicians-scientists in the preparation of Research Ethics Board applications (including Clinical Trials Ontario), writing, assembling and supervising research reports, and enhancing professional development for research coordinators/assistants
  • Train research staff in recruiting participants and conduct study-related procedures
  • Evaluate all research personnel employed in the DCCM
  • Provide expertise and assistance in preparing grant applications and budgets
  • Manage operating budgets and submit all legal contracts
  • Triage of Sprint applications to CCRS members. The Research Manager is responsible for triage, and assignment of work to DCCM project staff

The Research Manager will report to the Director of Critical Care Research and Chief of the Department of Critical Care Medicine.


Here's What You'll Need:

  • Advanced degree in Health Science or related field
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience as a people manager
  • Experience in clinical research and certification as a clinical research associate (e.g., SOCRA accreditation) would be definite advantages
  • Thorough knowledge of research regulations and conduct all types of clinical research studies following multiple regulatory authorities and frameworks: Research Ethics Board, Tri-Council Policy Statements (https://tcps2core.ca), ICH Guidelines https://www.ich.org/page/ich-guidelines, Good Clinical Practices, Health Canada, and Federal Drug Administration (FDA of the USA).
  • Familiar with grant preparation, budget preparation and management, appraisal process, data management, and the research regulatory process
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity and inclusion objectives
