Position Summary
Reporting to the Director, Analytics & Technology Services, the Manager, Business Intelligence Services is responsible for overseeing the work of the Business Intelligence Services department. This role will work closely with their team and other business units to foster a culture of data-driven decision-making by empowering teams with the right tools, data, and self-serve analytics. The Manager, Business Intelligence Services leads the harnessing of data into actionable insights that drive decision-making across the organization. This role will play a key part in shaping data governance practices and preparing for the integration of generative and traditional AI technologies.
Your Key Responsibilities
Ensure the operations of the department align with ASEBP’s strategic direction, objectives and culture set forth by the ASEBP trustees and the executive team
- Evaluate and report on the progress of the department in its strategic direction.
- In collaboration with the Director, identify, monitor and report on key performance indicators.
- Oversee change management within the department.
- Using ASEBP project methodology, sponsor and/or allocate subject matter expertise to organizational initiatives and projects as needed.
Manage all aspects of day to day operations, ensuring excellent service in business intelligence programs. This includes team management, process improvement, risk mitigation and resource allocation
- Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures that enable the optimum performance of the Business Intelligence Services department in support of ASEBP operations.
- Create accountability, consistency and quality delivery of BI programs and services.
- Develop operational intelligence roadmaps by leveraging your expertise as it relates to the benefits industry, disability management, and business intelligence best practices.
- Leverage business intelligence tools to deliver impactful insights, performance narratives, and data-driven decision support across the organization.
- Apply principles of real-time analytics and generative and traditional AI to modernize BI capabilities and accelerate data-driven innovation.
- Provide guidance and support to the team, ensuring they have the tools, training and resources to execute their work efficiently and effectively.
- Manage team workload volumes and delegate accordingly.
- Oversee and continuously improve department workflows and processes.
- Manage budget and resource allocation within the department.
- Identify, address and mitigate issues and risks as required.
Provide business intelligence information and expertise throughout ASEBP as needed
- Partner with internal teams to identify data needs, translate business questions into analytical solutions, and deliver insights that support strategic and operational decision-making.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on BI tools, data visualization best practices, and performance reporting standards.
- Facilitate a self-serve analytics culture by enabling business users with training, guidance, and well-governed data models.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define and track key performance indicators and service-level metrics aligned with organizational strategy.
- Ensure data definitions, governance practices, and reporting standards are applied consistently across all departments.
- Contribute to enterprise initiatives by supplying timely, accurate, and actionable data to inform policy development and operational improvements.
- Act as a liaison between business and IT teams to ensure the right data infrastructure supports evolving reporting needs.
Leadership and team development
- Ensure the team structure is optimized for service excellence.
- In conjunction with Human Resources (HR), recruit, interview, orient and train new employees.
- Ensure team members have the knowledge and skills to excel in their roles and grow within their career pathways.
- Provide regular coaching and mentoring to employees, ensuring they receive timely feedback to maximize their performance; Actively engage in the individual performance management of team members.
- Ensure team is updated on organizational policies, team processes and safety protocols.
- In conjunction with HR, actively identify and create opportunities for employee learning and development.
Liaise with other departments to foster strong working relationships, seamless cross-departmental processes and meet organizational goals
- Work collaboratively across all divisions to ensure organizational effectiveness.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders across the organization to communicate the team’s vision, build partnerships, and identify critical BI deliverables.
- Alert relevant areas of trends and information that is discovered through BI analysis.
Your Education and Experience
- Post-secondary education in computer science, information systems, data analytics, business, or a related field.
- 5 – 10 years of progressive experience in business intelligence, data analytics, or information systems including 3 – 5 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Proven track record of leading data and reporting initiatives using tools such as SQL Server (SSMS, SSRS) and Power BI
- Experience working in group benefits is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with data governance practices and evolving technologies such as generative AI, data modelling, machine learning, and data warehouse management is considered an asset
A combination of education and experience may be considered.
Your Abilities
- Experience managing data professionals, and mentoring data analysts
- Strong experience in building and maintaining interactive dashboards with PowerBI
- Advanced proficiency with relational databases, report development, and performance tuning using SQL, SSMS, SSRS, and other data delivery tools.
- Familiarity with ETL/ELT pipelines and data warehousing concepts
- Understanding of data stewardship, data lineage, and data cataloging tools
- Exposure or openness to learning about Generative AI, particularly as it applies to data modeling and analytics acceleration.
- Demonstrated interest or experience in evolving data governance policies
- Extensive knowledge of the health benefits and disability management industry.
- Experience migrating or enhancing legacy reporting systems toward self-serve analytics and centralized BI platforms
- Extensive working knowledge of data privacy practices and data ethics.
- Strong understanding of the value of processes, process mapping, and documentation.
- Transformational leadership skills, including strong emotional intelligence.
- Strong analytical abilities with an understanding of the principles of working with large and complex health insurance data.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to discover data anomalies.
- Adept at data storytelling.
- The ability to leverage insights and opportunities from data and metrics to build strategies and recommendations in the health benefits and disability management industry.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships at all levels and communicate with various stakeholders.
- Strong written and verbal skills with an ability to effectively communicate complex data to a variety of audiences.
