Street Haven is a dynamic women’s multi-service agency that provides shelter, supportive housing, training supports, and addictions therapy to vulnerable women in Toronto. We were established in 1965 and serve 1500 individuals annually. We have seen an increasing complexity of mental health and addiction needs among our clients. We are seeking a qualified and passionate candidate to take on this temporary role who can be part of our high performing team and provide comprehensive support to improve the lives of our clients.
Position Overview
Training Services provides services that build self-sufficiency for women through education, life skills workshops, pre-employment training and case management support. The Life Skills Facilitator works across all programs in Training Services and conducts workshops both at our locations and in the community. We are seeking a dynamic, engaging and passionate Life Skills Facilitator.
Key Contributions
Workshop Facilitation:
- Organize, Plan and Facilitate social activities for clients both on site and in the community
- Organize, Plan and Facilitate celebrations for holidays and special days (International Women’s Day, Black History Month) to engage clients, working collaboratively with the Events Manager.
- Ongoing needs assessments with clients to ensure programming is relevant and engaging
- Support clients one to one for individualized needs including homework help, support completing refugee and immigration documentation and other support as requested
- Provide ongoing, face-to-face and virtual support, including job search training, skill-building, work preparation, and related services
- Have knowledge of community services, programs and resources across the City of Toronto
- Facilitate Employment Support workshops to support clients to find and maintain employment Refer clients to other programs within Street Haven and in the community
- Facilitate diverse, client-centered adult literacy, and life skills workshops, tutoring, referrals, and consultations for women at various stages of the educational pathway.
- Deliver workshops to women in areas of life skills, self-care, financial literacy and housing support among other topics
- Facilitates Successful Housing and Life Skills Workshops to all clients across the agency, at different locations within Street Haven
General:
- Provide general programming supports, including planning, development and implementation of social, educational and training initiatives
- Work collaboratively with all teams in Street Haven to develop meaningful, relevant and timely programming reflective of client demographics and demonstrated needs
Key Competencies
- Post-secondary education in a related field in the Social Services, Social Sciences, or Adult Education.
- 2-3 years’ experience developing and facilitating educational and pre-employment programming, including workshops with small groups.
- Experience using all Microsoft programs, with expertise in Excel, and maintaining up to date client files that ensure confidentiality and accuracy.
- Knowledge and understanding of issues affecting homeless and socially isolated women, (i.e. addictions, mental illness, and the effects of poverty and trauma), and community resources to provide support and referrals.
- Skills in conflict resolution and crisis intervention and demonstrated ability to assess and respond appropriately to emergent situations.
- Must have up to date First Aid/CPR C Training or be willing to re-certify.
- Must work within a client-centred framework, and demonstrate practice of ethical and professional boundaries.

- Strong organizational management skills, meeting deadlines and managing multiple priorities
- Demonstrated experience of working within an Anti-Racism Anti-Oppression and Trauma Informed framework.
- Innovative and self-starter with ability to understand and maintain client/volunteer/worker boundaries.
- Must be adaptable and have a collaborative work ethic with all colleagues.
- Strong written and public speaking skills.
- Able to work in teams and independently
Hours of Work
This is a full time 1 year position for 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with the possibility of extension. Evenings and weekend hours will be required. Programming with the shelter clients often occurs in the evening and work hours will include 2-3 shifts per week from 12noon -8pm and some weekend days.
