Torn Banner Studios are the creators of Chivalry 2, the sequel to the multi-million copy selling original Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, as well as No More Room in Hell 2 in Early Access. We are a mid-sized independent video game studio of around 100 developers in Toronto, and we love creating innovative new experiences that focus on challenge and fun.
As the Lead Technical Artist at a small independent studio, you’ll have a wide range of responsibilities to execute the vision for the games we make. You will take ownership of the discipline and be responsible for planning and driving the technical feature sets of our projects. As the bridge between artists and programmers in dealing with the technical restraints of game development, you’ll play a significant part in helping us execute the vision of our projects.
Responsibilities
- Manage a small team of technical artists across multiple projects, including their tasks, performance, and career development.
- Lead the organization, planning, and development of the technical art team.
- Design, build, and optimize pipelines and workflows used by our teams to streamline and support production.
- Design, implement, and optimize assets including textures, shaders, and modelling.
- Act as the technical bridge between art and programming, driving innovation and technical strategy across our projects.
- Plan, estimate and prioritize time frames for the completion of day-to-day tasks and track progress.
- Fix bugs, including performance and budget issues.
- Implement and incorporate feedback from Directors, Principals, and Leads into work.
- Work with team to achieve the desired level of aesthetic quality and technical accuracy.
- Define best practices for our production pipelines, workflows, and tools.
Requirements
- 5+ years working in games as a Technical Artist, with at least 1 year working in a Lead capacity.
- Experience developing AAA titles on PC and console, ideally cross-platform titles released on both PC and console.
- Experience developing custom tools, including Editor-tools and/or Maya/3ds Max tools.
- Experience with game optimization, with knowledge of external profiling tools such as Unreal Insights.
- Knowledge of Physically Based Rendering and Linear workflows.
- Expertise on supporting both artists and programmers with technical issues and implementation.
- Strong technical knowledge and artistic abilities working within Unreal Engine 5, including experience with UE5 blueprint system.
- Experience with Unreal Engine, Maya, and Houdini.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, as well as presentation skills.
- A high degree of self-motivation and initiative-taking
Bonus
- Experience with 3D animation, lighting techniques, particle systems/VFX, and Unreal Engine 5 rendering pipeline.
- Knowledge of high-level coding languages such as Python or C++
