About the role:
At Modular, we are looking for a Lead Software Engineer in Test who will define and drive the strategy for quality across our engineering organization. This is a pivotal role shaping how Modular ensures product excellence as we build the future of AI infrastructure.
You will partner closely with engineering and product teams, develop a cohesive quality program, and guide the adoption of modern practices and tools. Your focus will be on driving measurable improvements in product quality through scalable, sustainable approaches.
LOCATION: Candidates based in the US or Canada are welcome to apply. You can work in our office in Los Altos, CA or remotely from home. Onboarding for new hires is conducted in-person in our Los Altos, CA office.
What you will do:
- Design and develop Modular’s Quality Strategy, defining principles, priorities, and metrics that enable continuous improvement.
- Implement and develop an end-to-end full stack quality system with cross-team collaboration.
- Integrate with teams to collaborate in developing testing strategies.
- Proactively identify systemic risks to quality and coordinate initiatives to address them.
- Monitor, analyze, and improve the effectiveness of Modular’s quality-related processes (e.g., test nondeterminism, CI/CD performance, release readiness).
- Provide technical guidance and thought leadership in quality for Modular ML products.
What you bring to the table:
- Experience ensuring quality in the domain of machine learning and numerical computing, with an understanding of the unique challenges in testing and validating these systems.
- Proven experience defining and implementing quality systems at scale.
- Devotion to quality and engineering excellence, with a track record of driving measurable improvements in product quality.
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to influence cross-functional teams, including product, engineering, and leadership stakeholders.
- Experience identifying and managing quality strategies across large software systems.
- Expertise with software delivery workflows and related tooling (e.g., build/test frameworks, static analysis, dependency management).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex technical ideas and influence organizational change.

The estimated base salary range for this role to be performed in the US, regardless of the state, is $234,000.00 - $286,000.00 USD.
The estimated base salary range for this role to be performed in Canada, regardless of the province, is $221,000.00 - $270,000.00 CAD.
The salary for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of permissible, non-discriminatory job-related factors, which include but are not limited to education, training, work experience, business needs, or market demands. This range may be modified in the future. The total compensation for a candidate will also include annual target bonus, equity, and benefits, with equity making up a significant portion of your total compensation.
