JOB OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Manager, Damage Prevention, the Lead Locator is responsible for completing buried facility locates (i.e. electrical cables, water lines, sewer lines, steam lines, gas lines, telephone lines and more), documenting and mapping buried facility locations with accuracy and precision, while adhering to strict company and client safety protocols, and procedures. This role also acts in a supervisory capacity to teams of Utility Locators by providing oversight, guidance and mentoring in the completion, performance, and accuracy of field work, providing training and skill development, resolving daily operational issues/problems as they relate to balancing of workload, vehicles, and locate equipment; and providing troubleshooting help to Utility Locators.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise the work of Utility Locators in the field.
Provide training, guidance, and mentoring to more junior team members.
Support operations with scheduling, workloads, vehicle and equipment.
Act as the technical expert and troubleshoot technical issues in the field,
Interpret and analyze site plans, area maps, and blueprints to accurately determine the location of underground utilities such as high-voltage electrical cables, water lines, sewer lines, steam lines, gas lines, telephone, and other communications lines.
Utilize maps, blueprints, computer databases, and location equipment to identify conduits; ensure accurate updates to records based on field findings.
Mark and document buried utility locations utilizing line locator equipment, to ensure precise utility detection.
Provide clear, accurate documentation and sketches with measurements and clear, concise field notes.
Participate in all safety meetings, attend required training, health and safety sessions, and other related educational courses.
Operate company vehicles safely.
Maintain and store locating equipment properly, ensuring it is cleaned and in good working condition.
Strictly follow health and safety protocols, including completing daily safety reports and forms.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum 5 years of experience in underground line/facility locating
Minimum 1 years of experience supervising or overseeing locate workers in the field
Experience working with contractors on-site to coordinate and perform locate activities for large projects.
Experience training and mentoring junior locators
Utility Advanced Line Locating Certification (PAL, CAPULC, or equivalent) an asset
Valid Class 5 Drivers License (with a clean 5-year abstract)
Ability to read and understand maps and drawings
Experience operating a variety of underground locating equipment (EM/RF Locators) used to assist in the locating and verifying of underground utilities
Knowledge of Trimble GPS and Total Station Equipment an asset
CSTS, OSSA/BSO, First Aid and H2S Alive Safety Certification
Ground Disturbance Training
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
Strong computer skills

WORK CONDITIONS
The position works in the field year-round, and therefore it requires an individual who is comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, and who is physically fit.
