Location: Edmonton, AB

Division: Projects & Construction

What We Offer:

  • Competitive Package:

Attractive salary and a comprehensive benefits package including performance bonus eligibility, flex benefits from first day of employment, extra paid leave, pension, employee share purchase plan, charitable donation matching, hybrid work environment and more.
  • Meaningful Impact:

Be part of infrastructure projects that directly support Alberta’s communities and natural environments.
  • Unique Project Diversity:

Get hands-on with a variety of projects across Alberta’s landscapes, from remote transmission corridors to community-driven distribution builds where no two days (or routes) are the same.

Why Work Here

At ATCO Electric, we’re energized by possibility. We’re not just delivering power, we’re building the future of energy across Alberta. Here, your work has purpose. You’ll collaborate with landowners, agencies, and community partners to shape thoughtful infrastructure solutions that connect people and places.

About the Role

As a Land Planner you’ll bring your knowledge of land use planning and environmental regulations to help us responsibly plan, route, and develop our transmission and distribution infrastructure. Reporting to a Supervisor in the Lands & Environment department, you’ll guide projects from the early planning stages through consultation and regulatory approval, ensuring environmental stewardship and strong relationships with the people and groups impacted by our work.

What You Get to Do:

  • Identify potential planning and environmental risks during project scoping and assist with schedule and budget forecasting.
  • Complete desktop and field-level assessments to flag sensitive environmental and land-use features.
  • Analyze spatial and project data to assess constraints and opportunities, factoring in environmental, technical, social, and economic considerations.
  • Manage consultants and contractors to ensure planning, routing, and environmental studies are completed to required standards, on time, and on budget.
  • Coordinate consultations and communications with landowners, local communities, Indigenous groups, government agencies, and other external parties.
  • Prepare project notification materials and regulatory applications, liaising with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, the Alberta Utilities Commission, and others as needed.
  • Proactively work with internal teams — including land, engineering, construction, and operations — to develop mitigation strategies for concerns raised by external groups.
  • Stay current with evolving regulatory and industry trends, ensuring compliance and supporting the continuous improvement of ATCO’s environmental and planning practices.
  • Support project field visits, contractor orientations, training, and reporting related to land and environmental compliance.

What You Bring:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Land Use Planning, Biology, Soil Sciences, or a related field such as Forestry, Agriculture, or Environmental Engineering.
  • Eligibility to obtain a professional designation within one year of hire.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in project planning, permitting, environmental assessments, or related regulatory activities.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and land-use planning processes at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels.
  • Strong understanding of project scopes, construction activities, and environmental impacts associated with infrastructure development.
  • Proven ability to build collaborative relationships and communicate effectively — with both internal teams and external communities.
  • Familiarity with GIS software and spatial data analysis.
  • Experience working with data sources like FWMIS, Landscape Analysis Tool (LAT), AbaData, SPIN II, and GLIMPS is an asset.
  • Experience with online permitting tools like RPATH, OPAC and DRAS is an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and platforms like Microsoft Project and Teams.
  • A valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License.

We would like to thank everyone for their application; however, only those being considered for an interview will be contacted.
