Job Summary
The Labourer is responsible for performing various physical tasks to support the construction and maintenance of buildings and structures. The Labourer completes constructions tasks contributing to the efficient progress and completion of projects. This role requires a strong work ethic, physical stamina, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. The Labourer reports to the Site Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities
- Site Preparation: Assist with the setup and preparation of construction sites by clearing debris, loading and unloading materials, and assembling temporary structures (e.g., scaffolding, barricades).
- Material Handling: Transport and load/unload construction materials, tools, and equipment to and from worksites, ensuring they are properly stored and maintained.
- Support Skilled Trades: Provide assistance to skilled tradespeople, such as carpenters, masons, electricians, and plumbers, by holding materials, operating equipment, and performing other supportive tasks.
- Concrete Work: Mix, pour, and spread concrete, and assist in the placement and finishing of concrete structures.
- Demolition: Safely demolish structures and remove debris from demolition sites, using hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment.
- Equipment Operation: Operate basic machinery and power tools, such as jackhammers, drills, saws, and compactors, under the supervision of a skilled operator.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times to ensure a safe working environment.
- Site Cleanup: Maintain a clean and organized worksite by removing waste materials, sweeping, and disposing of trash properly.
- Other Duties: Perform any additional tasks as required by the site supervisor or project manager.
Safety Compliance:
- Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure all tools and machinery are in safe working condition.
- Safe and efficient operation of hand tools and construction equipment.
Qualifications
- Physical Fitness: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy objects, standing for long periods, and working in various weather conditions.
- Experience: Previous experience in construction or a related field is an asset but not required. Familiarity with construction tools and machinery. Previous experience as a labourer.
- Skills: Basic knowledge of construction tools and equipment, good hand-eye coordination, and the ability to follow instructions. Strong problem-solving skills.
- Safety Awareness: Understanding of safety procedures and regulations in a construction environment.
- Work Ethic: Strong commitment to teamwork, punctuality, and reliability.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform physical activities such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, and handling materials.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy materials and tools, sometimes weighing up to 50 pounds or more.
Work Environment:
- Capable of working in various environments, including outdoor construction sites, and under various weather conditions.
- Exposure to loud noises, dust, and heavy machinery.
- May involve working at heights or in confined spaces.
- Travel and periodic out of town work is a requirement of this role.
