Title of Course

PSYC/NEUR 2P37, Applications of Brain and Behaviour 

Compensation 

Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds. 

Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $22.07 per hour. (Rate effective September 1, 2024)

Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $34.73 per hour. (Rate effective September 1, 2024)

In cases where additional duties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant’s duties, these hours shall be compensated at the appropriate Teaching Assistant rate.

 

Duties 

72 hours/half credit course appointment.  This position has both a seminar and laboratory component.  The nominal workload for this position is 72 hours per half credit course appointment.  Duties and responsibilities will be in accordance with Article 22 of the Collective Agreement, and may include but are not limited to, Attending lectures, assigned seminars, labs or tutorials on a weekly basis; Attending TA/Lab meetings as scheduled;  Preparation of seminar and lab materials; Cleaning up after labs; Proctoring and grading assignments, tests and examinations in a timely manner, and providing supportive and instructive written feedback; Holding office hours and answering student emails outside of scheduled student contact time; Maintaining accurate records; Help students overcome difficulties that they encounter when dealing with issues relating to the course material;  Other related duties as assigned by the Instructor. 

Qualifications 

1.  Must have completed or be enrolled in PSYC 5Y51/52 or PSYC 7Y51/52/53 OR Minimum 3rd Year complete and currently enrolled in a PSYC BA or BSc program, with an average of at least 80, and have taken PSYC/NEUR 2P36 and 2P37, or a full course equivalent in biological psychology with a laboratory component, and achieved a grade of at least 75 in each course.  Previous successful experience as a Lab Demonstrator in this course in an academic setting will be considered as equivalent. 2. Must have previous experience in lab-related brain & behaviour courses with a dissection component;  3.  Must demonstrate a clear and thorough understanding of all aspects of the course, including neuroanatomy and function, to clearly explain, administer, instruct and guide students through lab requirements, dissections, etc.; 4.  Must have the interpersonal qualities to be supportive of students and effective in leading group discussion;   5.  Must have strong organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to keep accurate records/manage data; 6.  Must have excellent time management skills in order to cover the required course material during the available seminar/lab or tutorial time; 7.  Must be adept at providing feedback to students in a constructive manner and in a timely-fashion; 8.  Must have experience with conducting dissections, and lab demonstrations; 9.  Must be able and willing to present material/conduct seminars remotely; 10. Must be able and willing to maintain contact with the instructor, fellow teaching assistants and enrolled students by email and audio-video conferencing and conduct seminars and office hours via audio-video conferencing in a timely-fashion.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to identify the course for consideration of equivalency.  For courses taken at Brock, identify the course (i.e., XXXX 1F90).  For courses taken elsewhere, provide a transcript (a copy of your course outline and grade summary from your student self-serve at that institution is sufficient); highlight the course and provide the course description.  Failure to provide the required documentation to support the request for consideration of equivalency will result in an incomplete application.
