* There is a possibility you may be given additional hours covering other program shifts pending your availability.
** Exact in-person program location is tentative and subject to change.
*** Program will not be running the following dates: Brock University’s Reading Week (October 13-17).
**** Facilitators must be available for both days at the specified times and must attend ALL program dates.
***** In addition to mandatory program training, facilitators will be required to complete the following upon commencing their position: (1) Accessibility of Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) Training Module; (2) Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) Training Module; (3) LDANR Orientation Module; (4) WHMIS; (5) Statements of Understanding.
Position Summary
The position of JUMP Math Program Facilitator supports the Learning Disabilities Association of Niagara Region (LDANR)’s numeracy tutoring program for children in Grades 1-8 who are demonstrating math difficulties due to a diagnosed or potential learning disability. This one-on-one numeracy program is designed to motivate and help children gain confidence and academic success in their fundamental math skills by pairing them with a trained numeracy tutor. It is also designed to help volunteer-tutors gain knowledge and experience in working with children who experience difficulties learning essential math concepts. Therefore, the Program Facilitator is responsible for assisting in the coordination, safety, delivery, and supervision of a JUMP Math program site.
Responsibilities
The Program Facilitator will:
- Support the Math Coordinator to implement and deliver the JUMP Math program effectively;
- Manage the volunteer-tutors who are working with the program participants;
- Supervise, assist, and support the volunteer-tutors to develop and implement an appropriate and effective individualized numeracy program to meet their child’s unique needs;
- Ensure each volunteer-tutor develops a unique workstation where their child’s successes are emphasized;
- Ensure each volunteer-tutor provides a positive learning environment to invoke self-motivation as the children develop number sense and problem-solving skills;
- Track the volunteers’ progress and abilities;
- Provide regular, constructive feedback on the volunteer-tutors progress;
- Conduct final volunteer performance evaluations on each volunteer-tutors’ performance over the 8 weeks;
- Unlock building and/or classroom as well as lock up before and after each session, if required;
- Regulate program volunteers’ attendance (sign-in/out) and children’s attendance (sign-in/out);
- Regulate pick-up and drop-off of children, ensuring only authorized adults are permitted to do so;
- Answer questions and concerns of volunteer-tutors and caregivers;
- Be the liaison between the LDANR staff and caregivers and volunteers;
- Communicate to volunteers and caregivers about upcoming LDANR events;
- Conduct caregiver information sessions on the first and final nights of program to discuss relevant policies, program information, and LDANR announcements;
- Collect volunteer-tutor session reports and pre-/post-assessments to submit to the Math Coordinator;
- Report to the Math Coordinator weekly;
- Other duties as required
Mandatory Activities
- Attend meetings as necessary
- Attend training sessions
- Responsible for transportation to and from program locations as well as transportation of 2 large site bins to and from program
- Must complete weekly feedback forms and submit them in a timely manner to the Math Coordinator
- Must fill out the required Incident/Accident forms when necessary
- Collect volunteer timesheets and assessment packages and return to the office in a timely manner upon completion of program
Qualifications and Skills Required
Eligible candidates for the JUMP Math Program Facilitator position include individuals who have earned a post secondary education or are currently earning a degree and have passed a criminal reference check with vulnerable sector clearance. Additional requirements and assets include:
- Police Vulnerable Sectors Clearance valid within two years (*mandatory)
- First Aid and CPR-C (required);
- Completion of the Accessibility of Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) Training Module – (*required upon commencement of volunteer position);
- Completion of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) Training Module – (*required upon commencement of volunteer position);
- Previous experience working with individuals with learning disabilities and/or children
- Previous experience managing groups of people
- Bachelor of Education or related field is an asset, but not required
- Background in Mathematics Education is an asset, but not required
- Driver’s license is an asset (must have own reliable source of transportation for in-person programs)
- A working reliable device, microphone and camera with reliable Internet access (*mandatory for online)
- Previous experience with Microsoft Teams (asset)
- Previous virtual tutoring/teaching experience (asset)

Support Provided
Training for this position will be provided at the orientation session prior to programs commencing. In addition, the Math Coordinator is available on an ongoing basis to answer questions and provide assistance as needed. The Program Facilitator and volunteer-tutors will have full access to our resource library/center for resources, tools, games, etc. that would be useful for math tutoring sessions.
