Accordingly, NAIT’s Intercultural Specialist champions and integrates intercultural competence across the institution, to meet the learning needs of a diverse student body and prepare graduates for an increasingly global and intercultural workplace.
The position leads planning, development, and implementation of the intercultural portfolio, with a mandate to provide intercultural competency capacity building and learning opportunities for staff, cross-cultural community engagement activities, and pedagogical integration of intercultural content across NAIT programs. This is intended to foster intercultural awareness, knowledge, and skills among staff and students that is grounded in a critical understanding of equity, inclusion, and the Truth and Reconciliation process. Reporting to the Manager, International Student Experience, the intercultural specialist leverages their expertise and leadership to accomplish the following:
- Develop and facilitate professional development programs that equip staff with intercultural competencies
- Develop and deliver learning opportunities for students to gain the intercultural skills that will help them thrive in a diverse campus community and in a global workforce
- Collaborate with international student experience team to better understand and support the diverse needs of newcomers and international students
- Collaborate with the academic program quality team to produce inclusive and culturally appropriate teaching resources and strategies that will help instructors and students from different cultural backgrounds succeed in the polytechnic classroom and workplace
- Collaborate with curriculum specialists, learning designers, and faculty chairs to ensure interculturally inclusive learning and multi-linguistic approaches are incorporated into the curriculum and course design
- Conduct research and incorporate institutional data to provide recommendations aimed at improving the experience of culturally diverse students
- Coach and advise staff on how to manage and overcome intercultural challenges across institutional activities
- Develop and conduct evaluations aimed at refining intercultural program outcomes, based on participant input, and documented best practices in intercultural development.
This work includes the development of resources; project planning; facilitating learner participation in courses and workshops; issues management; collaborating and liaising with key stakeholders across the institution. We are looking for someone who is truly passionate and committed about diversity and advancing and building understanding across cultures.
Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge of intercultural development theory, application, and the Intercultural Development inventory assessment tool.
- Demonstrated commitment to the principles and practices of equity, anti-racism, decolonization and Truth and Reconciliation.
- Collaborative and empathetic problem solver, with ability to appreciate and enable diverse viewpoints.
- Strong and demonstrated experience in developing and facilitating learning workshops, using different IT platforms.
- Strong interpersonal skills, and a high level of written and oral communication skills to engage colleagues, leadership, other NAIT work units, as well as external stakeholders.
- Tact and diplomacy, to navigate sensitive topics in group learning settings and when responding to challenging situations.
- Demonstrated resilience for change and conflict resolution.
- Understanding and experience related to international and newcomer transition challenges (academic; social etc.).
- Understanding of the needs of multilingual students and those from different cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to work as a team member and build collaborative working relationships within team and across NAIT.
- Experience with curriculum development is considered an asset.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree (with a focus in social studies, or communications), or related experience.
- Certification and/or specialized training in Intercultural development.
- A master’s degree related to international and intercultural communication would be considered an asset.
- 3-5 years of related experience:
- Developing and coordinating intercultural learning initiatives and programs
- Championing and leading initiatives that drive intercultural development
- Advanced public speaking and facilitation skills with ability to communicate with all stakeholders
- Demonstrates sound judgment and initiative.
- Ability to deal with individuals at various social and professional levels in tactful and diplomatic environment.
Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).
Remuneration: $71,098.04 – $95,372.94 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification – Advisor/Specialist II).
This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement
