As the largest mental health care provider in Canada, CAMH is frequently implementing innovations and novel service delivery interventions, such as Integrated Care Pathways. The full-time, contract (until October 31, 2025) Health Economist will play a critical role in the evaluation of these innovations and interventions, including cost-effectiveness analyses, with the goal of strengthening CAMH’s position as a health performance measurement expert in the development and dissemination of cost-effective mental health interventions with the goal of maximizing quality and efficiency. Specifically, this position will support CAMH’s strategic plan to increase novel service delivery interventions, which have been economically evaluated.

The IMHPR is seeking an individual with a track record of or demonstrable interest in mental health economics and policy research. The successful candidate will have an excellent understanding of principles of economic evaluation, advanced econometrics, systematic and scoping reviews, and health services research methodology. They will prepare manuscripts for publications in peer-reviewed journals and will support other scientists in the submission of grant proposals to external funding agencies, as needed. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to conducting and fostering research and enthusiasm about participating in multidisciplinary research and training activities. In addition, the successful candidate will support a workplace, which embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable and regulatory requirements. The position is primarily located at 250 College Street.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Undertake CAMH-related economic evaluations as well as provide related support in the submission of grant proposals to external funding agencies
  • Support systematic and scoping reviews related to economic evaluations, cost of illness studies and other related fields
  • Participate in projects on mental health economics and policy research
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals

Job Requirements

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Health Economics or a related field with an excellent understanding of principles of economic evaluation, advanced econometrics, reviews, and health service research and experience in working with large datasets, such as survey and/or administrative health care data. Experience and/or success in applying for funding, and developing quality applications to peer reviewed granting agencies is an asset. This position also requires an excellent (proven) track record and aptitude in writing for peer-reviewed publications, and skills in economic evaluation and statistical modelling. The successful candidate will demonstrate ability and experience in management of research projects and quantitative methods, including the ability to conduct high level statistical analyses, such as cost-effectiveness analyses and multivariate modelling. The candidate should be self-directed and have experience working in a highly team-focused environment with multi-disciplinary team members from diverse backgrounds. The ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, decision makers, and the scientific community is required. Other requirements include strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, problem solving, strategic planning skills, and negotiation skills; networking and partnership building skills; commitment to high quality work and attention to detail; and excellent communication skills (written, oral and presentation). Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language would be an asset.
