The Department of Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine (Faculty), University of Ottawa (uOttawa), The Ottawa Hospital (TOH/Hospital) is excited to establish a new Division of Hospital Medicine. We are seeking a visionary leader passionate about enhancing patient care, advancing quality improvement, driving innovative change, and support physician wellness to become our first Division Head.
The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario. There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually.
The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada’s top-tier medical faculties. As the most research-intensive Faculty at the University of Ottawa, the Faculty of Medicine contributes significantly to the University being ranked 5th in the country for total research revenues (Research InfoSource), routinely 2nd or 3rd in Canada for research intensity in Medicine/Science grants (McLean’s), 4th in Canada for citations (2022 THE rankings) and 1st for overall growth in Tri-council funding over the past two decades.
The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English/French) university in the world and the Faculty of Medicine first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada. Responsibilities
The Division Head is accountable to the Chair/Head of the Department of Medicine in fulfilling the mission, vision and goals of the Department, the Hospital and the Faculty, in particular as they relate to the Division.
The Division Head works closely with the Department of Medicine and hospital leadership to ensure our goals are achieved. Working collaboratively, you are responsible for strategic planning, overall performance, engagement, quality, operations, budget, capital, and service planning. This leadership team drives clinical and organization excellence, fosters teamwork, promotes transparency, and strengthens accountability for performance and outcomes at the division level.
The inaugural Division Head of Hospital Medicine will be responsible for leading the transition of the Hospital Medicine Program into the new Division. The Hospital Medicine program is currently an inter-departmental program which oversees over 400 beds across 5 departments. There are 5 program streams that are currently housed in separate Departments and Divisions that will be moved into the new Division. These program streams include Acute Medicine, Radiation Oncology, Transitional Care, Rehabilitation, and Mental Health.
The Division Head will also be responsible for future expansion with interested Divisions and Departments, which includes consultation, program proposals, financial analyses, physician recruitment, and inter-disciplinary collaboration for integration of new programs.
Qualifications
The successful candidate must have strong organizational skills and experience leading clinical teams. Strong collaboration skills and strategic change management are integral to this position.
The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be eligible for membership in the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have or be eligible for certification in Internal Medicine (FRCPC) or Family Medicine (CCFP) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario.
The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.
Job Benefits
The Division Head will receive a stipend for the position from the Department of Medicine. Other income will be derived predominantly from clinical billings (fee-for-service).
