Full-Stack Software Developer Intern
Safe Software is seeking a Full-Stack Software Developer Intern to join our Cloud Applications Development team. This is a four-month, full-time placement (with the possibility of an 8-month extension).
Our co-op placements provide opportunities for hybrid/on-premise work at our office in Surrey, BC, Canada. To ensure the best onboarding and mentorship experience, interns are required to work on-premise at least 2 days per week, with the flexibility to work remotely for the remaining 3 days.
About The Team
The Cloud Applications Development team focuses on keeping Safe Software’s technology innovative and forward-thinking. As an intern, you’ll play a significant role in designing, implementing, and testing software components that impact our customers directly. From the beginning, you’ll work on projects that lead to shipping production code.
Our team practices Agile development, leveraging Kanban boards to manage backlogs, epics, and stories. With a small, collaborative team (10 members), you’ll regularly participate in stand-up meetings, brainstorm sessions, and peer code reviews, where your ideas and perspectives will be valued.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Full-Stack Software Developer Intern, you’ll have the opportunity to:
- Develop new features for cloud applications, such as building REST API endpoints with Ruby on Rails or enhancing the user experience with the Angular framework.
- Analyze and debug complex issues, contributing to timely resolutions.
- Share ideas and updates during daily stand-up meetings.
- Collaborate with teammates on peer code reviews and brainstorming sessions.
- Explore and learn new technologies as well as Safe Software’s existing tools.
Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies
We're looking for a Software Development Intern to join our Cloud Applications team and contribute to the development of our cloud-based products: FME Flow Hosted, FME Hub, FME Account and FME AI Service. We value students who are enthusiastic about programming, collaborative, and eager to learn.
Below are the skills and experiences that will set you up for success in this role:
Technical Proficiency:
- Experience with a JavaScript framework (e.g., Angular).
- Practical understanding of an object-oriented programming language and web frameworks (e.g., Java/Spring, Ruby on Rails, Python/FastAPI).
- Knowledge of RESTful APIs, networking, and relational databases.
- Experience building responsive websites.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and spoken).
- Strong organizational skills to manage time and prioritize tasks efficiently.
- A passion for coding and curiosity about new tools and technologies.
- Problem-solving mindset with a willingness to bring forward new ideas.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Education:
- Working toward a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Desired Skills / Bonus Points
- Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git, GitHub).
- Knowledge of test-driven development principles.
- Senior students (3rd year or above) preferred.
- Previous co-op or related work experience is an asset.
- Project or work experience with Ruby on Rails, Angular or Python.
