What It’s Really Like Working at a Floral Shop (Spoiler: It’s Not All Roses)
To many, working in a flower shop seems like a dream — serene mornings, beautiful bouquets, gentle music in the background, and the air filled with floral fragrance. And yes, there are moments like that.
But here’s the real story: behind every romantic bouquet and stunning centerpiece is a whole lot of hustle — and quite a few Cinderella tasks. We’re talking sweeping petals, scrubbing buckets, unboxing heavy shipments, and yes, cleaning up after the magic has happened.
If you love staying busy, don’t mind getting your hands a little dirty, and feel satisfaction in doing the kind of work others overlook, keep reading.
We’re Open 7 Days — But You’ll Work 5
Our shop is open Monday through Sunday, and team members work five days per week on rotation. Everyone takes turns with weekends — unless we’ve discussed otherwise during hiring (some students love the weekend shifts, and we’re happy to accommodate that when possible).
- Yes, you will work some Saturdays and/or Sundays. (Sorry, weekend brunch plans might need to shift.)
- Shifts could be mornings, evenings, or a combination of both.
- This is not a side hustle — it’s a fast-paced environment where dependability and flexibility matter.
Less Pinterest, More Elbow Grease
A typical day might include:
- Taking multiple orders by phone, email, and in person.
- Entering orders into QuickBooks — accurately and efficiently.
- Receiving and prepping flowers, often involving cold water and fast hands.
- Cleaning, sweeping, mopping, organizing supplies — and yes, taking out the trash.
- Wrapping floral arrangements with care and packing them for delivery with precision.
There’s beauty in the work, but also a lot of behind-the-scenes grit that makes that beauty possible.
It’s Emotional, Too
We’re in the business of feelings — all of them.
From heartfelt anniversaries to messy breakups, apologies to “please disappear” messages, we’ve seen it all. We serve the romantic, the heartbroken, the guilty, the ghosted — and yes, even the cheaters. No judgment here — just beautifully arranged damage control.
Sometimes it’s “I love you.”
Sometimes it’s “I’m sorry (again).”
Sometimes it’s “Kindly get lost” — in peonies.
You’ll need to:
- Listen without flinching. (No criticizing at all)
- Get every name and message right (seriously, double check).
- Stay calm, kind, and classy — even when the order isn’t.
Whatever the occasion, we deliver with care and zero questions asked.
Creative, But Structured
Yes, you’ll get to work with color, texture, and composition — but within real-world limits like budgets, client requests, and what’s in season. This is creativity with direction, and your instincts will grow alongside your technical skills.
And About the Holidays…
Valentine’s Day. Mother’s Day. Christmas. These aren’t days off — they’re our Super Bowl. Expect full days, big volumes, and a shop buzzing with activity. Everyone rolls up their sleeves. Everyone’s in it together. And at the end of it all, it feels good.
Final Thought
If you take pride in the little things, don’t shy away from hard work, and believe there’s beauty in the behind-the-scenes, this might be your place.
We don’t promise glamour — we promise purpose, pace, and plenty of petals. If that sounds like your kind of shift, we’d love to meet you.
