The Field Technician is responsible for providing technical support to the field trialing program in the region for the purpose of delivering high quality data for statistical analysis and selection. The goal or our breeding program is to develop and register new hybrid varieties of B. juncea and B. napus (canola) for the North American market.
As a Field Technician, you create chemistry by...
- Supporting field operations as required and participating in the North American breeding seed setup to ensure all protocol are completed and ready for spring planting in a timely fashion.
- Operating, maintaining, and repairing small plot field research equipment such as tractors, seeders, sprayers, swathers, and combines.
- Managing the truck and trailer fleet, including ordering and coordinating maintenance and repairs, and overseeing annual safety inspections.
- Collecting in-depth phenotypic evaluation notes following protocols provided and ensuring data is entered electronically and maintained accurately at all times.
- Executing seed quality analysis (NIR) and liaising with lab to ensure accurate seed quality data. Supporting QA/QMS in activities as required by the breeding program.
- In collaboration with your manager, implementing and maintaining EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) program for facility and operations.
- Managing resources with the goal of achieving all breeding objectives and effective operation of the program which involves equipment maintenance, inventory and management of summer students.
- Establishing and maintaining industry presence and ensure that BASF is up to date on current industry activities by participating in meetings and establishing contacts with external parties.
If you have...
- A Diploma + 4 years of experience OR a Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture or related discipline + 2 years of experience in crop management, canola agronomy, field operations, and agricultural research.
- Competency in troubleshooting farm and small plot research equipment, as well as ability to service and repair equipment. Certificate in mechanics, welding (or related field) would be an asset.
- Heavy trailer endorsement (Class 3 License), or extensive experience trailering equipment as an asset or ability to obtain.
- Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to be flexible and modify plans as required to minimize impact on regional program as situations arise.
- The ability to work independently as well as in a team either as a member or supervising contract employees is required in fulfilling job responsibilities.
- A valid driver’s license required.
