Why Join Us?
The Educational Deaf Interpreter (EDI) role is responsible for American Sign Language (ASL) linguistic modelling and support to Deaf signing students, along with facilitating the learning of Deaf culture in various educational settings.
Day-to-day, the EDI:

  • Provides the Deaf student with ASL instruction in the classroom and social settings
  • Supports the student in their learning of the differences between the unique cultures of home and classroom.
  • Works alongside the classroom teacher, Supervisor of Educational Interpreting Services, Education Support Teacher -DHH, and ASL Specialists.
  • Alongside the educational team, the EDI works to support the student with the transition from an Educational Deaf Interpreter to an Educational Interpreter.

What you bring to the table:

  • Lived experience/first voice perspective as a Deaf, deaf, and hard of hearing individual.
  • Native Fluency in ASL
  • Experience working with children and youth
  • Ability to obtain an ASLPI Rating from Sign Language Institute of Canada (SLIC).
  • Functional literacy in English.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Is collaborative when working within a team.
  • Comfortable working in a virtual learning environment.
  • Follows the standards/criteria laid out by the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI)

Would be a plus if you have:

  • Early Childhood Education training
  • Deaf Adult Literacy Training
  • ASL/English Literacy experience
  • ASL Instructor experience or training
  • Deaf Interpreter Experience or Training
  • Linguistic/translation work
  • Community support/advocacy work
  • Residence counselling, summer camp counselling
