Who We Are
The Mikisew Cree First Nation (Mikisew) has lived on the ancestral lands of the Athabasca Delta and Wood Buffalo National Park in northeastern Alberta since time immemorial. The lives of our members are linked to the land and to a close understanding of traditions, history and a natural way of life. Many of our members live in the hamlet of Fort Chipewyan, and our traditional lands range over a large portion of Athabasca oil sands deposits. For nearly 30 years, Mikisew Group, our wholly owned business arm, has worked toward the long-term, sustainable economic progress of our Nation and its members through employment and significant investments in education, training, social programs and infrastructure.
Who You Are
Therese Tuccaro Secondary School is currently seeking dedicated and compassionate Educational Assistants to support student learning and well-being in a secondary school environment. This role involves working alongside teachers and support staff to assist students with diverse academic, behavioral, and emotional needs, while fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging classroom experience. TTSS runs a community-based education program that focuses on land-based learning and traditional teachings, while following the Alberta Program of Studies. With employment, candidates will have the opportunity to participate in land-based learning, travel through field trips, postsecondary institution tours and more. This position is based in Fort Chipewyan, AB
Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one or small group support for students with diverse learning needs.
- Assist in implementing individualized program plans (IPPs).
- Support teachers with classroom management.
- Encourage student participation and help create a positive learning atmosphere.
- Monitor student progress and report observations to teachers and specialists.
- Build positive and productive relationships with students, parents/guardians, peers and other in the school and local community to support student learning.
- Establishes, promotes, and sustains inclusive learning environments where diversity is embraced and every student is welcomed, cared for, respected and safe.
- Promotes foundational knowledge about Mikisew Cree First Nation, Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation and Metis for the benefit of all students.
- Willingness to participate in community activities, events, and programming will exponentially support student and family relationship; therefore, increasing academic excellence and cultural, language and place understanding.
- Additional duties as assigned by the Principal.
Qualifications
- Experience working with youth in an educational or care setting.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Familiarity with special education practices is an asset.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of the Woodland Cree and/or Dene culture and experience working in Indigenous communities is an asset.
- Clean criminal record & vulnerable sectors check is required.
