About Us


Maintaining our provincial built infrastructure is no small job.


The Department of Public Works manages 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, 4,100 bridges, and 9 provincial ferries. Our District Highway Operations Division plays a critical role in managing various programs, functions and activities throughout our province, including snow and ice control services, road maintenance and repair services, and approval of various permits.


We’re recruiting for a District Director in the Northen District to lead change and provide strategic direction in the delivery of highway maintenance and construction programs. This is your opportunity to have a direct impact on economic development within the province, as well as the safety of the traveling public.

About Our Opportunity


As the District Director you lead the efficient and effective delivery of highway construction, maintenance and administration services. Through the planning and coordination of Department activities, you ensure the road network within your District is well maintained.

Primary Accountabilities


Your engineering expertise is instrumental in providing innovative solutions for complex construction and maintenance situations. You will establish the efficient utilization of resources for roadway surface and bridge maintenance, inspections, and snow and ice control services; all the while ensuring adherence to the various policies and acts which guide the industry.


You are pivotal in building relationships with key stakeholders and will have frequent communications with the Executive Director for Highway Maintenance and Operations, Chief Engineer, Deputy Minister, and other senior government officials.

Qualifications and Experience


You have a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and several years of progressive leadership experience in a maintenance and construction environment. Registration as a Professional Engineer, and member in good standing with Engineers Nova Scotia is required.

Regular travel across the province is a component of this position; as such, a valid driver’s license is required.

Experience in the following is essential, including:


  • capital and operations budget management, and resource management;
  • labor relations; and
  • developing strategic plans and priorities.


You are knowledgeable with industry relevant environmental standards, legislation, regulations and best practices. You lead your team in achieving organizational goals by communicating vision and fostering a culture that promotes teamwork and collaboration. You encourage new ideas, offer innovative solutions, and utilize best practices along with new technologies to enhance your work. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, and quickly adapt to competing priorities, contentious issues, and challenging deadlines.


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions


Your normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day. You may be required to work overtime on occasion.


The majority of your work is conducted in a comfortable office environment with moderate travel required within the Province.


There is pressure to meet deadlines while juggling a diverse number of projects that require ongoing planning/revising. You must be able to manage stressful, complex situations and balance many different issues and considerations. Work is often subject to extensive scrutiny and criticism by the public and by the diverse communities served.

Pay Grade: EC 15

Salary Range: $5,005.74 - $6,257.15 Bi-Weekly
