Job Summary
The Compost Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and long-term development of a composting program. This includes managing organic waste collection, ensuring proper composting techniques, monitoring the composting process for efficiency and safety, and producing high-quality finished compost. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of soil health, sustainable waste management, and compost science.
Responsibilities
- Liaise with the Farm General Manager regarding compost quality and equipment issues.
- Oversee product mix and compost batches; provide productivity and quality feedback.
- Foster a safe, clean, and efficient work environment.
- Support Phase 1 employees with leadership and direction.
- Manage shift entries and documentation systems.
- Maintain a safe work environment, ensuring PPE is used and training is up to date.
- Maintain high-quality compost standards with consistent outcomes.
- Develop substrate formulas to adapt to changing conditions and ensure reliable production.
- Maintain accurate records and share them with the Technical Team.
- Manage proper bunker operations to produce high-yield substrate.
- Develop SOPs for standardized substrate and sanitation procedures.
- Operate equipment proficiently and provide hands-on training, including use of the Fancom computer control system for Phase 1.
- Step in for Phase 1 Supervisors as needed to ensure task continuity.
- Supervise timely and accurate compost delivery to the Phase 2 process.
- Ensure the facility remains clean, organized, and well maintained.
- Report all equipment issues daily and weekly to the Maintenance Manager.
Requirements
- 5-7 years composting experience
- Experience in composting, organic waste management, agriculture, or related fields.
- Knowledge of compost science and soil biology.
- Familiarity with composting methods
- Ability to operate and maintain equipment (training can be provided).
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
- Physical ability to perform outdoor manual labor in various weather conditions.
