Who We Are:
Calgary Unitarians is a welcoming, inclusive, and progressive spiritual community. We are a congregation that values reason, compassion, and connection, and we are dedicated to nurturing the spiritual growth of people of all ages, including our children and youth. We are committed to creating a neuroaffirming environment that celebrates diverse minds and learning styles.
The Opportunity:
Are you an organized and friendly individual who enjoys supporting families and working with children? We are seeking a dedicated Religious Education Assistant to be a vital part of our team. This role is the perfect blend of behind-the-scenes administrative support and front-facing hospitality, all focused on creating a wonderful experience for our youngest members and their families.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administrative Support: Assist the Director of Religious Education with data management, including maintaining attendance records, managing registration information, and preparing communications for families and volunteers.
- Occasional Childcare & Program Support: Provide caring and attentive childcare during Sunday services and special congregational events. This includes supporting neurodivergent children by understanding and respecting their communication styles, sensory needs, and autonomy. Serve as a calm, reliable, and supportive presence for our children, volunteers, and parents.
Who You Are:
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, with an ability to manage simple data tracking systems.
- Warm, approachable, and skilled at building positive rapport with people of all ages.
- Comfortable and confident in caring for children in a small group setting. Experience with or a strong understanding of supporting neurodivergent children is a significant asset.
- You utilize a child-led, neuroaffirming approach and are familiar with strategies that respect sensory differences, non-traditional communication, and autonomy (e.g., minimizing demands, offering choices, using declarative language).
- Extremely reliable and punctual, with a commitment to Sunday morning availability.
- A proactive team player who can also work independently.
- A successful candidate must provide a clear Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
Bonus Qualifications (Preferred but Not Required):
- Previous experience in an administrative or childcare role.
- Lived or work experience in creating inclusive, accessible environments for neurodivergent individuals.
- Familiarity with Unitarian Universalist principles and communities.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification.
Our Philosophy:
Our community is built on the belief that every person has inherent worth and dignity. We actively reject practices that seek to enforce compliance. We are seeking a candidate who shares our commitment to acceptance, accommodation, and celebrating neurological differences.
What We Offer:
- A supportive and positive work environment within a caring community.
- Competitive hourly wage.
- The opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children and families.
How to Apply:
Please submit your resume and a brief cover letter explaining why you are a great fit for this role and how your approach aligns with our neuroaffirming philosophy to [email protected] with the subject line "Religious Education Assistant Application."
