Located within the Victor Dahdaleh Institute for Genomic Medicine, the Centre of Genomics and Policy (CGP) is an interdisciplinary and international research Centre with a special focus on how universal human rights can both frame-omics and other health innovations while also supporting the promotion and protection of human health. The CGP provides support to researchers, health care professionals, patients, and policymakers around the world to help them navigate complex legal and policy hurdles and transition, among other things, to big data and AI learning systems under a comparative, international ecosystem approach.
Under the supervision of Professor Yann Joly, the Academic Associate will – in their professional capacity, contribute in the coordination of large-scale work on ethical and legal aspects of large-scale projects in genomics as well as contribute to the CGP through the development of policies and publications. This is a in-person position.
Major duties and responsibilities:
  • Support senior staff with the overall implementation and coordination of large-scale work on ethical, legal and policy aspects of large-scale research project in genomics (including, but not limited to attending project meetings and teleconferences, organizing workshops filling in reports, etc.);
  • Conduct literature review of the legal, ethical and policy aspects of genomics;
  • Review provincial, national, and international normative documents;
  • Provide input and support in the conception and drafting of grant proposals;
  • Develop and draft policy for relevant stakeholders (public professionals, health institutions, researchers, research ethics board, etc.);
  • Participate in the organization, distribution and oversight of the work of research assistants involved in an assigned research project; participates in their training;
  • Draft publications for peer reviewed scientific journals;
  • Present the described above at Canadian and international academic venues;
  • Collaborate with team members at the Centre of Genomics and Policy;
  • Perform any other activity assigned by the supervisor and other Directors at the CGP.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Education/experience
  • Master’s degree in law or bioethics; or professional legal license (Bar) from a Canadian provincial jurisdiction;
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in ethical, legal or policy-related work;
  • Prior experience in the legal, ethical or policy issues of AI is an asset;
  • Prior experience in data governance/policy is an asset
Other qualifying skills and abilities
  • Proficient in English and working knowledge of French
  • Salary is commensurate on the candidate’s experiences.
