As the Water Stewardship Coordinator, you’ll blend Traditional Knowledge with Western science to lead water protection efforts, advocate for water rights, and ensure the health of our rivers, lakes, wetlands, and groundwater. From monitoring water quality and guiding conservation projects, to educating youth and partnering with Elders, researchers, and governments — your work will help secure clean, sustainable water for generations to come. This position reports to the Lands and Environment Manager.

ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation (ʔAFN) is a member Community of the Ktunaxa Nation. ʔAFN exists for the Community. Note: This position is full-time with a set weekly schedule (35 hrs/week, Monday - Friday), working onsite in Windermere/Invermere, BC.
The primary responsibilities include:
- Protecting and restoring aquatic ecosystems
- Advocating for Indigenous water rights and policy change
- Engaging the community through workshops and education
- Collaborating on environmental monitoring and research
- Managing water stewardship projects and securing funding
- Other duties as required
Qualifications:
- Diploma in environmental science, water resource management, biology, or a related field.
- 2 - 4 years of experience in water stewardship, environmental monitoring, or Indigenous governance.
- Professional designation is considered an asset: Certified Environmental Professional (EP) through Eco Canada, Registered Professional Biologist (R.P. Bio, College of Applied Biologists), Applied Scientific Technologist (AScT), Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of BC.
- Ability to research and understand Indigenous water rights, environmental laws, and policies affecting First Nations.
- Ability to engage with Elders, community members, and stakeholders.
- Experience in research, data collection, and reporting.
- Grant writing and project management skills.
- Understanding of climate change impacts on water systems.
- Experience with community engagement or stewardship initiatives.
- Cultural awareness and a respectful understanding of Indigenous communities and values.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a proven ability to build trust and maintain relationships across diverse groups.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Organized, dependable, and detail-oriented.
- A collaborative spirit and proactive approach to problem-solving, negotiation, and strategic thinking.

What we offer:
- Starting salary between $60,000 to $67,000, depending on experience
- Discretionary office closure between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, as determined by the Council each year
