Job Profile
The City of Cambridge has an opening for a Water Operator on the Preventative Maintenance Crew working within the Environmental Services Division, Infrastructure Services Department. Reporting to the Supervisor of Water, duties include operating, maintaining, and performing preventative maintenance on City Water and Wastewater networks.
What you will be doing
- Works within the Water Subdivision, performing repairs and preventative maintenance activities on water distribution system, including main break repairs, service leak repairs, valve exercising, hydrant maintenance and repairs, dead-end flushing, etc.
- Must display comprehensive knowledge of all distribution system infrastructure.
- Fully proficient in performing technical tasks such as utility locating, leak detection, and troubleshooting service calls (i.e. water on/offs low pressure, water quantity/quality concerns).
- Provides labour and driving assistance as required during water service/main repairs.
- Proficient operation of equipment such as backhoe, excavator, loader, vactor, skid steer, dump truck, weigh scale, crew truck, valve turning equipment, along with various hand/power tools (i.e. Quick-cut saw, shovel, rake, wrench, hammer, etc.) is an asset.
- Performs various regulated drinking water sampling, including, bacteriological, pH, lead, nitrite/nitrate, turbidity, metals, and chlorine residual monitoring.
- Understands all Water Standard Operating Procedures, Drinking Water Quality Management System, work-flow management, and other common corporate policies and procedures.
- Can be considered OIC (Lead Hand) on a temporary basis.
Education, Certification and Licenses
High school Grade 12 diploma or equivalent plus additional program/courses of up to six months or equivalent.
Possess valid Water Distribution Level 2 (WD2) Certification as issued by the MECP
Please Note: Candidates who are not fully licensed but hold a valid Water Distribution (WD1) as issued by the MECP may be considered.
Minimum Requirements
Over 36 months, up to and including 48 months of work related experience.
Possess a valid DZ License or higher in good standing, with a driver’s abstract acceptable to the City (4 or less demerit points may be considered acceptable).
Must be able to meet the physical demands of the role through the City's provider.
Location and Hours of work
This position is located at the Bishop Operation Centre, Cambridge Ontario.
Regular hours of work for this position are Monday to Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. (40 hours per week) with the requirement to be available for overtime as needed.
Your compensation
This position is located within our CUPE 32 (outside workers union) compensation salary schedule Job Grade 7 and has an hourly rate of pay is as follows (2025 rates):
Starting Rate: $34.63 per hour
12-Month Rate: $35.70 per hour
24-Month Rate: $36.78 per hour
Comprehensive Benefits Plan including: medical, dental, vacation etc. along with Pension plan (OMERS Plan) is included.
