We are accepting applications for a permanent full-time Wastewater Operator Level III to join our team. The Wastewater Operator is responsible for assisting in the operation, maintenance, repair and upkeep of the Comox Valley Water Pollution Control Centre, pump stations and other related equipment and facilities. Reporting to the Manager of Wastewater Services, the primary responsibilities of this role include:
- Installing, operating and maintaining pumps, generators, motors, instrumentation, heavy equipment and other wastewater and landfill gas collection system equipment and structures;
- Interpreting data from instrumentation and alarms, analyzing and troubleshooting problems and implementing solutions;
- Assisting trades personnel in repair work as required;
- Performing various laboratory tests, recording and maintaining information;
- Assisting with the unloading, storage, transfer and closing of bulk and packaged chemicals;
- Performing a variety of general housekeeping duties such as painting, cleaning and landscape maintenance;
- Testing, calibrating, maintaining and repairing equipment utilized in the operation, repair and maintenance of wastewater facilities;
- Responding to enquiries and complaints from the general public;
- Periodically providing instruction as required to junior level operators and operators-in-training when they are assigned to specific projects;
- Operating trucks and equipment as qualified and required;
- Providing relief coverage at the compost facility as required.

- Team oriented with strong interpersonal skills;
- Current in standard practices, procedures, codes, regulations, tools and equipment used to operate, maintain and repair plant processes and equipment;
- Safety-conscious with a demonstrated commitment to safe work practices;
- Detail oriented with the ability to keep accurate and complete records;
- Mechanically inclined with strong troubleshooting skills;
- Flexible in working extra hours on standby and emergency call-out on a rotational basis.
The minimum qualification requirement for this position is Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) Municipal Wastewater Treatment Certification Class 2 or eligible for certification within six months of hire.
- Over four up to and including five years of directly related experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of wastewater systems, with at least two years direct responsible charge;
- Educated at the post-secondary level equivalent to two years of study in a related field of sciences following Grade 12 graduation (or equivalent);
- Certified with EOCP (Municipal Wastewater Treatment Certification Class 3) or eligible for certification within six months of hire, First Aid Level 1 and Valid BC Class 3 Driver’s license with air brake endorsement;
- EOCP Wastewater Collection Certification (Class 1), certification in Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and confined space entry is preferred.
Successful candidates will be required to consent to a Canadian Criminal Record Check.
This is a CUPE Local 556 position with a current wage rate of $42.88 per hour.
