Nature of the Position
Reporting to the Manager of Public Works and general supervision of the Public Works Foreman, the Utility Operator I assists with all activities related to the constructing, operating and maintaining of roads, stormwater and sanitary infrastructure, parks, and the airport.
Duties include general manual labour using hand and powered tools and equipment; installation, maintenance and repair of sewer lines, connections and related infrastructure; repair and installation of wastewater treatment plant and lift station equipment; inspection, maintenance and repair of the wastewater collection system; maintenance of the stormwater system including clearing catch-basins, culverts, ditches and sewers; responding to emergency call outs pertaining to the wastewater collection system; and carrying out road repairs such as fixing potholes, minor paving, grading and ditching. The Utility Operator I operates a variety of small powered equipment in addition to heavy mobile equipment such as a 5-ton dump truck, skid-steer, backhoe, excavator, salt and brine truck and snow-plow vehicle.

The successful candidate may be expected to receive and maintain RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance; therefore, existing valid enhanced reliability security clearance would be an asset.
Working Conditions
This is a regular, full-time unionized position within the BCGEU. The wage is set at Grid Level 8, $34.52 - $38.36 per hour plus an attractive benefits package. Hours of work are 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday. This position involves shiftwork, including weekends for snow and ice removal. Flexibility to respond to evening and weekend emergency call outs is required. The District of Sechelt supports employment equity in accordance with the Human Rights code of BC.
